  2. Sect.1 –Causes of the Civil War • Election of Abraham Lincoln • Slavery • States’ rights

  3. The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 • The act of 1854 let the states decide if they wanted to be a free state or slave state.

  4. Vocabulary • States’ rights- the idea that states have the right to limit the power of the federal government • Secede- withdraw from the union • Abolitionist- a person who wanted to end slavery • Vigilante- are people who take the law into their own hands

  5. Sect.2 The Civil War and Texas • When the Confederates fired on Fort Sumter in South Carolina marked the beginning of the Civil War. • This event happened on the date of April 12,1861.

  6. The South Advantages and Disadvantages • Disadvantages- had fewer men to fight in war. • Fewer railroads to transport troops and supplies. • Advantages- knew the land better than the Union. • Better generals and marksmen.

  7. The North Advantages and Disadvantages • Disadvantages- Soldiers were not trained as well. • Fighting on unfamiliar land • Advantages- had all the factories/industries • More soldiers for fighting

  9. Answers • 1. Election of Abraham Lincoln, Slavery, and States’ rights. • 2. Advantage- more soldiers for fighting/Disadvantage- Soldiers not trained as well. • 3. Advantage- familiar with the land/Disadvantage- fewer soldiers • 4. a person who wanted to end slavery

  11. Sect.3 Civil War • Southern states had to meet some conditions before reentering the Union. • End slavery • Declare secession illegal • All adult males had to take an oath of loyalty to the U.S. • After the states met these terms they could govern themselves again.

  12. Economic and Social: • Southern states became a one crop economy.(Cotton) • To get the seeds out they used a cotton gin invented by Eli Whitney. • The northern economy had more industries.

  14. States (VS) Federal Rights: • The people in the south thought that the states should control themselves. • They thought the federal government shouldn’t have the right to make decisions about the states’ issues.

  15. Reconstruction (Sect.4) • Reconstruction began in the south in 1867 • Reconstruction refers to the federal governments’ plans to restore the south to the Union.

  16. Questions • Name at least 3 southern states. • Name 3 northern states. • What was the south economy based on? • What was the north economy based on?
