What is a complement? • Complement-Complements are words that come after linking verbs and modify nouns. The most common noun complements are adjectives and nouns, but can be many other parts of speech as well. • Not to be confused with a predicate • Follows a linking verb • A noun clause

Objective Complement • Noun, pronoun, or adjective which follows a direct object and renames it or tells what the direct object has become • may follow certain verbs in English. Sentences with object complements follow the pattern: S + V + O + Complement. Object complements may be either nouns or adjectives. • Example: They considered him a criminal.
Direct object Complement • A subject complement follows a linking verb; it is normally an adjective or a noun that renames or defines in some way the subject. • he direct object and answers the question • A direct object is the receiver of an action in a sentence • Can be a noun or a adjective, or any word acting as a noun or adjective. • Example: Joe sold me his boat.
