  9. Indirect Objects An indirect object is a noun, pronoun, or word group that sometimes appears in sentences containing direct objects. IO’s tell to whom, to what, for whom, or for what the action of the verb is done. If a sentence has an indirect object, it has a direct object as well.

  10. Subject Complements*Write in your grammar section.* A subject complement is a word or group of words in the predicate that identifies or describes the subject. A subject complement is connected to the subject by a linking verb. Two types of subject complements are predicate nominatives and predicate adjectives.

  11. What do you notice? A dog is a good pet. Strawberries are a delicious fruit. Casey has been a great student.

  13. Predicate Nominatives A predicate nominative is a word or group of words in the predicate that identifies the subject. In other words, it renames the subject.

  14. You could put an = sign to show their relationship: • Dog=pet • Strawberries=fruit • Casey=student

  15. Find your complement. I’m going to give you an item. You will have about 3 minutes to find your “complement” or match. Your complement will have something that identifies your item. Once you’ve found your complement, you need to create a sentence using a linking verb, showing how the two items are connected. Ex. Items: Book and reward Sentence: Reading is its own reward. OR

  16. What do you notice? Everyone felt good about the decision. This milk smells sour. Bentley must be happy about her good grade.

  17. Write in your notes: Predicate Adjectives Subject + linking verb + predicate adjective Everyonefeltgood about the decision. This milk smellssour. Bentley must be happyabout her good grade.

  18. Write in notes. • A predicate adjective is an adjective that is in the predicate and that describes the subject.

  19. Find your complement. • I’m going to give you an item. You will have about 3 minutes to find your “complement” or match. Your complement will have something that describes your item. Once you’ve found your complement, you need to create a sentence using a linking verb, showing how they are connected. • Ex. Jaguar and ferocious • Sentence: The jaguar isferocious.
