  1. Counter Argument Paragraph

  2. Sentence #1: Topic sentence Sentence #2: Introduce counter argument Sentence #3: Direct quotation w/leader statement Sentence(s) #4 (5): Analysis of quotation Sentence (s) #5 (6): Paraphrase Sentence(s) #6 (7): Analysis of paraphrase Sentence #7: Closure sentence-always goes back to thesis statement Parts of a counter argument paragraph

  3. Write your thesis statement on a sheet of paper: Although some believe a school uniform policy inhibits individual freedom, research supports that it reduces discipline issues, makes students behave more maturely, and is cost effective for families. Use Handout

  4. Wearing school uniforms is a highly controversial issue in the United States. Topic sentence

  5. There are many who believe that wearing school uniforms is a bad choice for students. Introduce counter argument

  6. According to Dr. Alan Hilfer, senior psychologist at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, “By instituting a uniform policy, schools are taking away kids’ individuality—schools need to decide if that sacrifice is worth making” (Svensen). Direct quotation with leader statement

  7. Dr. Hiler hits on a very important issue in this debate. If every student looked like another student, then the policy would in fact take away the freedom students have to dress the way that best expresses who they are. One of the roles of teachers is to instill an independence in students, to make them think for themselves. A school uniform policy would negate that teaching. Analysis of quotation

  8. Likewise, other experts believe that uniform policies are not deterrents to crime, nor can they be sure that it is the uniform policy alone that makes reductions in discipline issues possible (Svenson). Paraphrase

  9. Just because students wear blue shirts with kaki pants doesn’t mean that they will not bully other children, get in fights, or get better grades. It just means that they will look better doing all those things. Analysis of paraphrase

  10. So for some, a school uniform policy is not a great avenue to take when dealing with children and their individual freedoms, nor does it deter mischief among them. Closure sentence
