Essential Vocabulary • Reichstag- German parliament (legislature) • Concentration camp – camp where prisoners of war, people of minority groups, or political prisoners are confined under harsh conditions • Enabling Act – 1933 German law which gave the government the power to ignore the constitution for four years. • Adolf Hitler- 1889-1945, German dictator, leader of the Nazi Party. • Heinrich Himmler – 1900-1945, 2nd highest ranking person in Nazi Party, leader of the SS • Anti-Semitism – unfounded hostility, hatred, and discrimination toward Jews.

  3. Essential Vocabulary • Nuremberg Laws – laws the Nazi Party passed that gave a legal definition of a Jew (person with 3 or 4 Jewish grandparents). Laws also denied: • Jews the right to vote or work for the government • Marriage/pre-marital sex between Jews and Germans illegal • Kristallnacht – “night of broken glass” Nov. 9-10, 1938 -250 Jewish Synagogues burned -7000 Jewish businesses trashed and looted -Jewish schools, hospitals, cemeteries, and homes looted and destroyed -The following day, over 30,000 Jewish men arrested for the “crime” of being Jewish.
