BIOL3833

Explore the context and general principles of sensory processing in the human body, focusing on sensory systems and their role in the "four F's" (Feeding, Fighting, Fleeing, Reproduction). Discover how sensory systems detect and code stimuli, and the importance of reception, transduction, and coding. Understand the deceptive nature of our sensory systems and the active process of perception.

  1. BIOL3833 Week 12: Context and general principles of sensory processing

  2. Sensory Systems: Why?

  3. “The four F’s”

  4. “The four F’s” • Feeding

  5. “The four F’s” • Feeding • Fighting

  6. “The four F’s” • Feeding • Fighting • Fleeing

  7. “The four F’s” • Feeding • Fighting • Fleeing • Reproduction

  8. What do sensory systems do? • What is it? (feature detection & coding) • Where is it? (localization) • How intense is it? (Big/loud/bright/hot/cold/poisonous) • Is it changing? (moving, getting louder, brighter, etc.)

  9. General principles of sensory coding • Reception (Receptors absorb energy) • Transduction (energy converted to action potentials) • Coding (stimulus features converted to patterns of activity) • Inhibition is essential • Parallel processing • Our sensory systems deceive us constantly • Perception is an active process

  10. Reception and Transduction • Watch the HHMI video “Sensory Transduction: Getting the message” – necessary material for Equiz 9. • Thursday: Quiz then lecture/demonstrations on sensory transduction in hearing

  11. General principles of sensory coding • Reception (Receptors absorb energy) • Transduction (energy converted to action potentials) • Coding (stimulus features converted to patterns of activity) • Inhibition is essential • Parallel processing • Our sensory systems deceive us constantly

  12. Think Beyond the ”Five Senses”

  13. Reception & Transduction • Search & compile: (30 minutes) • Find and list as many kinds of sensory receptors as you can (there are dozens!). • Write one sentence for each type of receptor describing how it turns sensory information into action potentials.
