  2. NEPA is… • A US environmental law that was enacted on January 1st, 1970.It is enforced by the EPA • A law including a national environmental policy and requirements that ensure that agencies consider this policy in their decision making process

  3. Functions • This puts requirements on airports, buildings, highways that are being built and other federal activities that are proposed • The most common requirements of the Act are Environmental Assessments (EAs) and Environmental Impact Statements (EISs)

  4. EISs and EAs • An EA (Env. Assessment) is a statement that tells whether or not an EIS will be required • An EIS (Env.Impact Statement) is a statement that must be generated for any major project before it is built • It must describe the environmental impacts that their project will have
