The Invisible Poor: Cracks in the Affluent Society of 1950s America

In the 1950s, while American society was characterized by prosperity and materialism, over 20% of the population lived in poverty. Many farmers struggled as the cotton industry faltered, and the coal industry's decline affected communities heavily reliant on it. Urban poor faced increasing challenges from automation, which restricted their opportunities. John Kenneth Galbraith critiqued this imbalance in "The Affluent Society," while Betty Friedan's "The Feminine Mystique" highlighted the dissatisfaction of suburban housewives. Amidst this landscape, the civil rights movement gained momentum, confronting segregation and inequality.
