  1. DOT&PFRoad Design Criteria Alaska Trucking Association April 5, 2005

  2. Snap Shot Agenda • Design Standards • WB-50 vs WB-67 • Problem Intersections • Problem Locations • Future Design Criteria • Small Fixes • Measurable Fixes

  3. Freight Truck Distribution

  4. Preferred Freight Routes

  5. C st and Dimond • More room for left turn to Costco. Will worsen. Cut Median back more to accommodate more traffic.

  6. C st and Potter • Narrow lanes, need expanded shoulder.

  7. Potter turn #1

  8. Potter turn #2

  9. Dimond and King Street • Largest problem all directions. Once C st opens up problems only compound, due to Costco traffic and fabrication plants

  10. Dimond and Old Seward • Right turn on to Dimond lane narrows, trucks forced to take up all three lanes.

  11. New Seward onto Tudor • Left turn. Traffic cheats up can block trucks from making turn.

  12. Whitney road and North C st • Inadequate signage, RR Tracks very dangerous area.

  13. Tudor and Harding Street • Hard to make turns into industrial area

  14. Docking Area Concerns • Impeding Landscaping • Exaggerated Sidewalks • Placement of Signs • Rounded Curbs vs Strait Curbs • Large Medians • Split Medians

  15. Docking Areas Examples • Bad Example • Fred Meyer stores esp (Muldoon and Abbot) • Poor access • Excessive Landscaping BOLDERS • Median Design • Multi Modal Usage

  16. Docking Areas • OK Example • Carrs on Abbott • Specific Freight Access, NO POV traffic • Well Plowed • Good Example • Lowes on Old Seward • NO BOLDERS • Area to turn around and back in • Designated Lane

  17. Small Fixes • Rounded curb vs Strait curb • Cut back median to allow more traffic to get into turn lanes • Signal Optimization • C Street and Muldoon • New Problem at Sea Galley and ASRC Light • New Muldoon Light Prior to Glen Entrance • Ride with a Trucker get “View from Cab”

  18. Long Term Fix • Adopt and Utilize WB-67 vs WB-50 • Demonstrate understanding of turning radius • Work with P&Z to accommodate commercial growth • Eliminate unnecessary medians • Have annual workshop with Muni, engineers to assure sound understanding and design vehicles

  19. Ultimate Fix • Establish Freight and Policy arm of DOT to help encourage commerce and promote useful road design. • eg (Washington State)
