  1. Olympic Eventing By: Rachel Speaker

  2. Introduction! • Eventing has been an Olympic Sport since ancient times. • Horses have always been involved in the human events. • As time has gone by the sport has changed a lot. • The sport has become so complex that certain sport organizers felt the need to change how it is ran.

  3. Thesis! • The FEI should tell the truth about the Eventing Formats and revert back to Classic Format because of the dangers the Short Format caused, the affects it had on the sport, and the alleged reasons for its institution.

  4. The Change! • The sport of Eventing changed their format before the Olympics of 2004 From the Classic Format, that has always been used, to the Short Format, which is a new style.

  5. Why The Change? • There was not enough space to hold such events around the world • Money was becoming an issue • They felt it would be better on the horses

  6. Space? • The FEI had said that there were not enough places that had enough space to hold these events. • In reality there are many places all over the world that have enough space for such event. • For example, “The Kentucky Horse Park, Horse Park of New Jersey, The Virginia Horse Center, and Fair Hill are all places available for Classic Format Events” (Wofford 17).

  7. Money? • The FEI also said that the funding for the event was getting low and hard to find the money for all of the obstacles, entries, and all other items. • However, there was a lot of fund raising going on and there never was a problem with having enough money. The • The FEI simply just needed another reason to change the format

  8. Horse Health? • Eventing is a very long and hard thing to do. Your horse has be in a top condition and have the endurance to make it through the event. • The new format eliminated the Steeple chase from the events • That was a bad idea because the steeple chase is what helps the horses the get their knees up and warm up any other muscles they will need.

  9. Horse Health? • The Idea was that shorter format, easier to do. • Not true at all. • It turned out to be harder on the horses • This caused many more falls, injuries, and deaths.

  10. Falls!

  11. Falls! • The Short format caused most of these falls • The rate of deaths and injuries increased majorly since the change was made.

  12. Change it back! • If the FEI would change the format back there would not be as many deaths and injuries.
