  2. Raisins or Roll-Ups. . .How Do I Decide? • Think of a student or child in your school or program, what nutrition decisions do they face? • Please write down one decision on a Post-It and in the middle of your table.

  3. Training Objectives • Understand the decision-making process and how to present skills-based instruction. • Apply the decision-making process to nutrition scenarios. • Coach students, parents, and coworkers to make thoughtful, informed nutrition decisions. • Learn to access health education resources from the California Healthy Kids Resource Center.

  4. Why are decision-making skills important?

  5. What decisions have you already made today? Did you go through a process? If so, what was that process? How do we make decisions?

  6. The Decision-Making Process • Figure out the decision question. • Identify possible choices. • Analyze each choice. • Select the best choice.

  7. Alternate Steps for Making Decisions (Younger Children) • What is the decision question? • Think about the choices. • Say NO to choices that are against your family rules [school/classroom] • Ask yourself what could happen with each choice. • Make the best choice.

Guided Practice Decision-Making Activity • Each group has a nutrition scenario with 3-4 items to choose from. • Each group selects a Teacher/Leader • The Teacher/Leader will guide the group through the decision-making process one step at a time. • Group members will discuss their responses at each step. • The Teacher/Leader will share the process and the small group’s decision.

  14. Independent Practice and Coaching Activity • Find a partner. One person will be the coach. The other person will be the decision maker. • Select one of the nutrition-related challenges from the poster paper • Use the Decision-Making Process handout to address that challenge. • Change roles. • Select another challenge and work through the process again.

  15. You are a Role Model! • How do our personal decisions impact our students? • What decisions can we make (at work, outside of work) to model healthy eating for our students?
