  1. Cosmetology Unit Subtitle: 90° Haircut

Holding Implements • Place thumb in moving blade (bottom blade) • Place ring finger in the top blade • Rest index and middle finger on the shank • Practice opening and closing the bottom blade • Close shear points • Slide thumb out of ring • Fold shears into palm • Hold in place using ring and pinkie fingers Cosmetology I - 90˚ Haircut

  3. Holding Implements • Palm shears • Pick up comb using thumb and forefinger • Use thumb and first two fingers to rotate and manipulate the comb Cosmetology I - 90˚ Haircut

  4. 90° On the Head • This haircut will use the 0 and 90 angles • Perimeter is cut at a 0° • Layering pattern is cut at a 90° • Vertical sections are cut at a 90° Cosmetology I - 90˚ Haircut

  5. 4 Sections • Part straight from bang section to nape • Part from ear to ear across top of head • Make sure partings are even and neat Cosmetology I - 90˚ Haircut

  6. Perimeter Sub-section • Sub-section a 1” parting around the perimeter of the head • This will be cut at a 0° • Establish length BEFORE cutting • This will be your guideline Cosmetology I - 90˚ Haircut

  7. Layering Pattern • Take 1” parting from bang to nape • This sub-section will be cut at a 90° • Cut UP from 0° • This will be your guideline to layer to Cosmetology I - 90˚ Haircut

  8. Sub-sections • Vertical sub-sections are used to complete the cut • Cut all sub-sections at a 90° • Cut from perimeter pattern to layering pattern • Always cut UP Cosmetology I - 90˚ Haircut

  9. Cut Up • Scissors should always be aimed upward • Cutting down can cut off the guideline • Some sections will feel awkward • Practice never cutting down Cosmetology I - 90˚ Haircut

  10. Check the Cut • When cutting vertically, check horizontally • In the back, use horizontal sections to check for tags Cosmetology I - 90˚ Haircut

  11. Finish • Check for tags • Always hold hair at 90° • There should be a gradual taper • Tags should not be evident Cosmetology I - 90˚ Haircut
