History/Definition • Cosmetology was known as “barbering” • A cosmetologist is someone who deals with hair and many other things. • The beauty industry consists of the following: hairdressers, manicurists, nail tech., makeup artist, salon owners and managers, aroma therapy and massage, skin-care, and etc.

  3. Definition • To be a cosmetologist you practice hair-care which includes washing, cutting, styling, coloring, perming, and conditioning treatments. • They also perform skin-care and nail-care. • Salon owners, beauty school instructors, school directors, hairdressers, etc., all stress over the importance of having good social skills.

  4. Definition • To be a cosmetologist you must have a high energy level. • Cosmetologists work on their feet all day.

  5. Education • If you are in high school you can go to a vocational school or a trade school to help build up a good foundation for postsecondary training by taking art, science, health, buisness, and communication arts.

  6. Education • To be a licensed cosmetologist, you must graduate from an accredited school and pass a state test. • If you are interested in being a receptionist for a salon you do not have to be a licensed cosmetologist.

  7. Training • Training takes about one and a half to two years of full time classes. • Training is very short and hands-on and specific • Classes are broken up into classroom study, lectures, demonstrations, and practice.

  8. Workspace • You can work in many different places. • Cosmetologists may work in hotels, department stores, hospitals, nursing homes, resort areas, or on cruise ships. • Some work in small shops.

  9. Workspace • You work 5-6 days a week. • Some salons are open 7 days a week. • weekends and holidays may be very busy. • 15,000 positions open up every year.

  10. Salaries • Salaries differ from salon and professions. • Top pay for a stylist is $45,000 a year • Entry level pay for large chains is $12,000 a year plus tips. • Average earnings are between $30,000 and $33,000 a year.

  11. Salaries • The hair colorist is the most highest paid per job in the beauty industry. • Billions are spent every year to keep people beautiful.

  12. Owning • Salon owners and managers hold regular meetings when the shop is closed to discuss matters related to business • Managers check supplies, equipment, makes appointments, handles money, bookkeeping, purchases all merchandise, and makes sure that all legal regulations are met.

  13. Skills and Duties • You have to have good social skills. • Positive attitudes • Working well with people you don’t know. • Talking to people you don’t know.

  14. Skills and Duties. • You have to keep up with hair trends. • You have to fix someone’s hair to their likings. • Your success will come from good communication skills.

  16. Disadvantages • Being on your feet all day • Working all week • Keeping up with appointments • If your working by yourself you cant call in sick.
