  3. Background for the study… • Competent gamers have developed a ”gaming literacy”. (Gee, 2003; Pelletier, 2005) • To play computer games = To be aware of the rules of the game. (Juul, 2003; Linderoth, 2004)

  4. Lisa & Gunas gaming session… • How does a person (with no former experience in gaming) learn to play Timesplitters 2? • = Adapting to the game environment. • To progress in the game: Must develop 2 types of competence/skills.

  5. 2 types of competence/skills • Operational competence (from computer simulation area) Ex. How to learn to fly an airplane… ”How to do something” Ex. from video…

  6. Conceptual competence. Understanding of the underlying model (Alessi, 2000) Ex. from video…

  7. To adapt… Lisa develops both operational and conceptual competence. Guna doesn’t develop the conceptual competence = can’t adapt to the game environment = Doesn’t progress in Timesplitters 2.
