Goals • Become more comfortable navigating the Bible • Learn how the pieces of the Bible fit together • Read the Bible- history, stories, characters, letters, poetry, songs • Memorize the books of the New Testament
The Big Picture of the Bible • Old Testament —The story of God’s people (the nation of Israel ) up until the time of Christ. • New Testament —The story of Jesus and God’s people (the Church ) since the time of Christ.
The Old Testament Books • The Old Testament has 3 major types of books: • 1. History (First 5 books are the Pentatuch or Torah) • 2. Poetry • 3. Prophecy (Major Prophets and Minor Prophets)
The OT Historical Books • Of the 17 historical books, 11 are “primary” in the sense that they advance the storyline, and 6 are “secondary” (they amplify and supplement the primary books). • The latter are Leviticus, Deuteronomy, Ruth, 1 & 2 Chronicles, and Esther.

The New Testament Books • The New Testament has 3 major types of books: • 1. Historical Books (the 4 Gospels and Acts) New Testament —The story of Jesus and God’s people (the Church ) since the time of Christ • 2. Letters written by the Apostle Paul (sometimes called Pauline Epistles). Some of Paul’s letters are written to entire churches and some are to individuals leaders • 3. Letters written by other NT authors (sometimes called General Epistles)
