  2. Who is Medgar Wiley Evers? • Medgar Wiley Evers was an African American civil rights leader

  3. His life and family • He married classmate Myrlie Beasley on December 24, 1951. • Myrlie Beasley and Medgar Evers had three children, two boys and a girl, before he was murdered in 1963.

  4. His activism and belief • He helped to organize the RCNL's boycott of service stations that denied blacks use of their restrooms. • He believed in attaining civil rights for all African Americans.

  5. His role in NAACP • Evers was appointed Mississippi’s first field secretary on November 24, 1954.

  6. Assassination • On June 12, 1963, Evers pulled into his driveway just after returning from a meeting with NAACPlawyers. He was shot in the back and collapsed in his driveway. He was rushed to a local hospital where he died 50 minutes later.

  7. Schools named in his honor • In his honor, Medgar Evers College, established in Brooklyn, New York. • Also Medgar Evers College Prep School was named in his honor.
