  2. Early Life • born july 2, 1925 in Decatur, Mississippi • Inducted into U.s Army in 1943 • Attended Alcorn College in 1948

  3. Start of NAACP • Married Myrlie Beasley on December 24, 1951 • Established local chapters throughout Mississippi Delta • Organized boycotts

  4. Brown v. Board of education (1954) Applied to University of Mississippi law school, but was denied

  5. History in the making Became Mississippi’s first field secretary for the NAACP

  6. Later life in NAACP • Opened office in Jackson, MS • Boycott of merchants in early 1960s • James Meredith admittance to University of Mississippi in 1962

  7. Tragic Death Assassinated in driveway of own home in 1963

  8. Murder Trial Bryon de la Beckwith found guilty of murder in 1994 and sentenced to life in prison

  9. Legacy of Life • “Only a Pawn In Their Game” By Bob Dylan in 1963 • For Us, the Living by Myrlieevers in 1967 • Medgar Evers College established in 1970 • “For Us, the Living: The Medgar Evers Story” made in 1983 • Statue made in his honor in Jackson, MS in 1992
