  4. EU Plant Health regulations • They’re only as good as a Member State’s interpretation of them!

  5. Beyond Plant Vectors… • Anything that can host a pathogen is a potential vector • Separate regulation covers Timber, Packing materials …

  6. Natural movement of Pest and Disease • P&D moves about without Man’s help! • Our Island Status gives us added protection • … So buy more from UK Production! • Makes good Economic sense too • Just as good as increased Exports!

  7. The UK Nursery Trade • How much plant material do we import? • Why do we import so much? • Productivity issues? • Time and investment?

  8. Forward Order Contracts? • In the Woodland and Forestry sector • In the Amenity sector • Recognition of the importance of locally grown stock

  9. Summary • No reason why UK Nurseries can’t increase their production • Plant Health benefits if they do • Economic benefits if they do • Need to recognise and value these benefits • Need to encourage forward procurement
