The government recognizes Holodomor as an act of genocide. Stalin did this to ruthlessly crush opposition from the state.

  7. Rejecting Liberalism • Dictatorship: - a form of government in which, one person or a small group possesses absolute power. Dictators are not accountable to the citizens, often use force, and maintain their power through intimidation, and fear.

  8. Techniques of Totalitarian Dictatorship • 1.) Force -to secure obedience, dictators use threat or the use of physical force -suppress opposition (real or imaginary) -secret police create terror within the population

  9. Great Purge • Stalin wanted to purge the country of any threat to him and the development of the country • At least 1,710,000 people were arrested • At least 1,440,000 people were sentenced • At least 724,000 were executed • Stalin used his secret police to purge the government, military, and citizens

  10. Techniques of Dictatorship • 2.) Indoctrination: • Control of the media • Make the ruler seem to be kind, concerned for the people to the point that they seem superhuman • Control the education system • Extreme use of propaganda

  11. Stalin controlled all media • Used extreme propaganda • Rewrote Russian history.

  12. 3.) Direction of Popular Dissent (Scapegoating) -build hatred to a real or imagined group -projecting that all national problems are the fault of that group For the communists their enemy was the capitalists

  13. 4.) Controlled Participation -allows non-members to feel like part of the elite -give people the appearance of having a voice in government ex: having elections but only allowed to vote for one party http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4I-JEU5RUeE&feature=related
