  1. The New Republic Chapter Preview In this chapter we will look at what happens now that the United States have their freedom and a new and strong central government, the Constitution of the United States…..

  2. Imagine…. The American Revolution has ended, the Articles of Confederation have been replaced by the U.S. Constitution, and George Washington has been elected first president of the United States. *You are an event coordinator at the presidential estate (the white house doesn’t exist yet), and they want you to learn about George Washington in order to create a unique centerpiece (decoration) for a ball held in Washington’s honor.

  3. There are several notable events that the centerpiece needs to reflect:

How the Americans enforced the new Constitution • Judiciary Act of 1789 Washington’s creation of lower federal courts (state, local) • Created all laws “necessary and proper” so that the Constitution could work…. (Alexander Hamilton’s Bank System) • They stopped the “Whiskey Rebellion” showed military strength and preparation (no fighting) • Purchasing Land for the United States in 1803 (Louisiana Purchase) • Established Judicial Review (the Supreme Court’s ability to declare a law of Congress Unconstitutional)in the court case Marbury vs. Madison.

  7. How Political Parties got started • They started because of Hamilton’s Financial Plan • Two sides were arguing whether creating a National Bank was allowed according to the Constitution

How the United States doubled its size! • After George Washington and 2nd president John Adams, President Thomas Jefferson decided to purchase a piece of land to the west of the Mississippi River • He bought it from the French leader Napoleon Bonaparte for 15 million dollars • This was called the Louisiana Purchase of 1803

  9. How the United States dealt with other Countries • During the late 1700’s (Washington’s Presidency), France had their own revolution • They over threw their king, King Louie XIV • The rich were too rich, and the poor extremely poor • Washington chose to stay out of their revolution even though the French helped them during theirs

  10. What were some of the problems of the United States in the late 1700’s? • The Whiskey Rebellion • Creating a stable economic system • Setting up a court system • Defining the authority of the federal government
