  1. Supplementary Table 1: Schematic of Drug Treatments and Withdrawal Schedule.

  2. Supplementary Fig. 1: Mecamylamine injections do not affect locomotor behavior in mice under basal conditions. Mice were treated with various doses of mecamylamine before being placed in the open field arena for 30 min. Mecamylamine did not produce hypolocomotion, even at doses as high as 10 mg/kg.

  3. Supplementary Fig 2: Localization of microinjections for the experiments summarized in Fig. 2. A. Injections into MHb (red circles) and Hippocampus (blue circles). B. Injections into IPN (red circles) and VTA (blue circles) for control- and ethanol-treated mice.

  4. Supplementary Fig. 3: Acute injections of nicotine or ethanol have no effect in mice injected with saline or drinking saccharine water. A. Control-treated mice received acute injection of saline (SAL) or nicotine (NIC). B. Saccharine-treated mice received acute injections of saline or ethanol (ETOH). n’s: (A) 10, 10; (B) 8, 9.

  5. Supplementary Fig. 4: Localization of microinjections for the experiments summarized in Fig.4. A. MHb injections. B. IPN injections.
