  3. Why Is 3rd Grade Important? • Benchmark Year • Promotion Policy: students must earn a cumulative passing grades in reading and math as well as a passing score on the ISAT • Standardized Testing: • ISAT –early March • MAP testing –Winter and Spring • REACH Performance Tasks – Fall and Spring

Goals • Reading & Writing • Use word analysis (root words, inflections, and affixes) to identify words. • Use a variety of decoding strategies to recognize new words when reading. • Self-monitor reading and use strategies to self-correct miscues. • Use a variety of resources (glossaries, dictionaries, thesauruses, internet) • Make connections to stories they are reading; by comparing and finding similarities to other stories; by making a connection to themselves; or by relating it to something they have seen. • Identify genres of poetry. • Use information to generate and respond to questions that reflect higher level of thinking skills. (analyzing, synthesizing, evaluating) • Develop a paragraph using proper form (topic sentences, details, summary/conclusion) • Proofread and revise one’s own work. • Demonstrate subject-verb agreement • Speak effectively using language appropriate to the situation and audience • Writing Focus: Quarter 1 – Narrative Quarter 3 – Expository/Informational Quarter 2 – Opinion/Argument Quarter 4 – Poetry/Descriptive

Goals • Math • How to read and interpret graphs • Learn about place value through hundred thousand • Tell time • Adding money and finding change • Solve two step problems with whole numbers using multiplication & division • Use geometry to explore perimeter, area, and volume • Represent, order, label, and compare familiar fractions • Explore adding & subtracting decimals • Measure objects using standard units of measure in the U.S. customary and metric

  7. Classroom Rules 1. Listen when others are talking. 2. Follow directions. 3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. 4. Work quietly and do not disturb others. 5. Show respect for school and personal property. 6. Work and play in a safe manner.

  8. Absences/Tardies Five unexcused absences or tardies will result in a students detention. • Absences are only excused with a written note.

  9. TEST • All test must be signed and returned. (With the exception of spelling test) • Reading • Weekly test will be given on Friday • Spelling • Weekly test will be given on Monday • All other test will vary

  10. Homework Homework • Reinforces the skills and materials learned during classes • Prepares students for upcoming lessons Late Homework • Late work = a 10 point deduction • Five or more late assignments result in a check on the progress report/report card

  11. Grading Scale 100 – 90 A 89 – 80 B 79 – 74 C 73 – 66 D Below 65 F All Work Will Be Check!! Not All Work Will Be Graded!!!!

  12. Science Fair • School Science Fair will be on Friday, December 6 • Third Grade Due Date: • TITLE, PURPOSE & HYPOTHESIS Due September 23, 2013 • COMPLETE RESEARCH REPORT Due November 4, 2013 • VISUAL DISPLAY BOARD Due November 18, 2013 • Science boards are sold for $4.00

  13. Miscellaneous Book Reports • 5 per quarter Lunch Money • Please send exact change!!! • Don’t pay ahead!! Birthdays • Seal, store bought treats (Please be aware of allergies) Label • Please label all clothing and accessories!!!! Recess • Dress your children accordingly Forms • Please send any missing forms you might still have!!! PTO • Join!!!
