  1. The Amazing Bubble Experiment The Effect of Different Types of Bubble Solution on Bubble Diameter

  2. Exploring the Scientific Method • In today’s experiment we will use bubble solution, mixed from three different brands of soap to blow bubbles on our desks using a straw. Each solution has equal parts water and soap. • Once the bubble pops, we will measure and record the bubble diameter. • Our objective is to figure out which brand of soap makes bubbles with the biggest diameter.

  3. Step 1: State the Problem • The statement of problem is a question that you will answer in the experiment. It asks what the effect of the independent variable will be on the dependent variable. • Write the Statement of Problem on your lab sheet. • Which brand of soap makes bubbles with the biggest diameter?

  4. Step 2: Collect Information • In your science journal, list qualitative observations about each brand of soap. You will use these observations to form your hypothesis.

  5. Form a Hypothesis • A hypothesis uses background information to create an educated guess about what will happen in the experiment. A hypothesis is written in an “If…then” format. • If we blow bubbles with three types of bubble solution and measure the diameter of the bubbles, then ______________will make bubbles with the biggest diameter.

  6. Design the Experiment • The Independent Variable in this experiment is… Brand of soap • The Dependent Variable in this experiment is… Bubble diameter • The Constant Variables in this experiment are… Surface, straw, rate of air through straw, etc.

  7. Conduct the Experiment • Gather materials: straw for each member of the group (3), paper towel, dry surface • Teacher will pour ¼ cup of solution A on your desk. Spread solution with hand. • Student 1 blows bubble using straw. Once it pops, measure the diameter of the bubble and record. Students 2 and 3 repeat this for solution A • Clean surface with paper towel and rasie hand for teacher to bring Solution B. • Repeat procedure with Solutions B and C. • Record data on table
