Benefits of Reading • Those who read more regularly scored more highly in not only spelling and vocabulary, but in mathematics tests • Students who read for pleasure gain: • reading attainment and writing ability • Text comprehension and grammar • Breadth of vocabulary • Greater self-confidence as a reader • General knowledge • A better understanding of other cultures • A greater insight into human nature and decision-making. • Reading for enjoyment is more important for children’s educational success than their family’s socio-economic status

  6. What stops students reading? • Volume of homework • Use of the Ipad/computer/phone • Watching television • Clubs • Socialising • Tiredness • Finding it hard to get into a book • Finding it boring • Being easily distracted • Not being able to find good books • Getting out of the habit

  7. What can we do? • Create a culture that values reading • Give time to reading • Subject-specific resources • Challenge students • Think about the homework we give • Encourage use of the library • Not neglect the power of paper
