  2. Staff INSET: Objectives • To introduce i-learn: speaking and listening (ILSL) • To demonstrate how the content can be used to teach speaking and listening skills in an innovative and engaging way • To prepare for a hands-on practice session

  3. Rationale of ILSL • Explicit teaching of the four Framework strands of speaking and listening • Planned and purposeful opportunities for talk, structured interaction and drama • Provision of good models for talk, including group discussion and interaction

  4. Rationale of ILSL • Opportunities to rehearse and apply skills in literacy and across the curriculum • Opportunities to talk about talk and reflect upon its usage • Planned assessment opportunities

  5. Main features • DVD-ROMs make the best use of ICT: • Video: Models for talk, drama strategies and conventions, samples for discussion • Audio: Stories and poems, samples of talk for analysis • Interactive activities: Games for whole-class usage

Main features • Teacher’s Books provide: • Introductory materials: Useful background information on techniques and conventions • Succinct teaching plans: Flexible materials and ideas for whole-class, group and paired activities • Assessment: Peer- and self-assessment opportunities, success criteria, assessment charts

  7. Structure • Each DVD-ROM contains eight units • Each unit is divided into six focuses • Speakercise provides stimulating additional activities for younger children

Year 1 units • Performing poetry: Children learn how to read aloud effectively, understanding the role of expression • The art of presentation: Children learn how to make a good impression using verbal and non-verbal techniques • Asking good questions: Children learn how to generate questions for further clarification • Telling stories: Children learn the basics of storytelling in preparation for telling a story

Year 2 units • Expressing opinions: Children learn how to think independently and to share views and opinions effectively • Instructions and directions: Children produce an effective set of oral instructions • Creating tableaux: Children discuss and create a series of tableaux to represent a story • Effective explanations: Children produce an effective oral explanation using verbal and non-verbal communication skills
