  1. E3G - Third Generation Environmentalism Bárbara Mendes-Jorge 14 December 2012 TweetDeck - a training session

  2. Audit of E3G’s social media use undertaken ahead of upcoming website relaunch We are looking to improve the promotion of our website content and breadth of E3G Twitter, in particular, can help us with outreach and sharing of E3G insights, both about our own work as well as our thoughts on media stories, documents etc. TweetDeck has been identified as a tool which can help manage Twitter output and increase our capacity to do this Easy for multiple people in several locations to access E3G account E3G - Third Generation Environmentalism Why TweetDeck?

  3. Introduction to TweetDeck TweetDeck is a “social media dashboard application” It is the most popular Twitter application, and is available as an app on both iPhone and Android Two most useful aspects of TweetDeck: Scheduling future tweets Columns which allow for easy, in-depth monitoring E3G - Third Generation Environmentalism

  4. Sometimes it is not convenient to post tweets straight away Generally not good Twitter etiquette to bombard your followers with multiple tweets all at once TweetDeck has a “scheduling feature” which allows tweets to be created in the present, yet posted at a specific time and date in the future that you choose. The feature is immediately visible when you create a new tweet How to schedule a tweet Click the composeTweet icon  in the top navigation bar - a new window will pop up Type in your desired tweet and click the time settings icon in the bottom left-hand corner of the window. A calendar and time box will appear underneath the icon. Decide the date and time you would like your tweet to go out When you're ready to send, click  Once you've given a time and date for your message, a new column will appear showing your scheduled Tweets After scheduling a tweet, it is still possible to edit or delete it before the time it goes out In the scheduled tweets column, hover your mouse over the tweet you wish to change – options to “edit” or “delete” will appear in the bottom-right hand corner How to schedule tweets E3G - Third Generation Environmentalism

  5. How to insert columns On a normal Twitter account, it is only ever possible to monitor one aspect at any one point For example a search term, interactions, timeline TweetDeck allows you to create multiple columns to display specific content They do not have to be related only to the @EthreeG account For example, it is possible to see other accounts’ public mention and interactions E3G - Third Generation Environmentalism

  6. Column types There are a number of different columns that can be added In each case, it is possible to add a column which represents the E3G account, or instead search for a user and add theirs Tweets: Displays tweets sent from accounts Timeline: Displays timelines (what followers are tweeting) Mentions: Shows @ mentions Search: Displays tweets containing specific search terms Lists: Shows tweets from members of specific lists Messages: Displays direct messages Trends: Similar to “Search”; monitors current trends Favorites: Shows tweets that have been favourited Activity: Displays favourites, follows and list additions by your friends in real time E3G - Third Generation Environmentalism

  7. How to add, move, clear and delete columns ADDING Click the plus button on the navigation bar – then click on the type of column you want to add (e.g. interactions) A new window will always come up, explaining what the column does, and asking you for which account you want the columns displayed for Once you have clicked “add column”, TweetDeck adds the column to the left of existing columns MOVING Hover the mouse over the header of the column you want to move The picture representing the column will turn into an “edit” link.. Click on it An individual columns settings box will open above the column. Click the relevant arrow depending on whether you want the column move right or left DELETING Click “delete” in the settings box to remove the column from Tweetdeck entirely OTHER USEFUL TIPS Click “clear” in the settings box if you want to delete current tweets in that particular column – but not the column in itself Clicking the “columns” button in the TweetDeck navigation gives an overview of all current columns If you want specific sounds or popups relating to a specific column, tick the relevant boxes in the settings box E3G - Third Generation Environmentalism

  8. Keep in mind Just like a Twitter account, the E3G TweetDeck account is shared Please remember this when changing any columns or deleting any scheduled tweets etc – they might still be useful for someone else E3G - Third Generation Environmentalism

  9. THANK YOU! Any questions?
