This document explores the lack of effective firmware upgrade notifications for home users managing access points (APs). Currently, most users rely on web GUIs or customer service for firmware updates. The absence of direct notifications, especially for APs without LCD screens, hinders user experience. As a solution, we recommend an automatic notification system where APs periodically check for new firmware and inform clients during the association process. This ensures users are promptly notified about available updates, enhancing user convenience and reducing manual checks.

Abstract Recommendations for using management frames (Association / Re-Association response) notifications to announce the availability of new access point firmware. Samir Hodroj, T-Mobile USA
Problem Statement • AP firmware upgrade notification doesn’t exist today for end users in home environments • Currently most home users manage AP FW upgrade through AP web GUI or by calling vendor/ operator customer care for help • Many APs don’t have an LCD screen like other consumer devices to get firmware updates notifications • Service providers usually notifies the end users using SMS, E-mail, or the service monthly statement when a new FW is available for download • In general upgrading the AP FW for end users requires their confirmation Samir Hodroj, T-Mobile USA
Recommendation • AP checks for new FW periodically through a backend management server. • This mechanism is out of scope of what we are defining • AP determines a new FW image to be installed • AP notifies STAs during association that “a new AP FW is available” • A new IE is used for FW upgrade notification Samir Hodroj, T-Mobile USA
Firmware update notification 4 2 1 • Implications: • User doesn’t have to login to AP web GUI / check for new FW. • User is notified immediately through the STA whenever a new FW is available STAs with 802.11v AP with 802.11v 5 3 AP checks for new FW Clients associates with the AP Internet AP notifies the client during association FW server AP determines a new FW is available STA notify the end user through a pop-up message Samir Hodroj, T-Mobile USA
