  2. The Challenge The NASA Workforce Plan includes five principles: • Recruit and Employ a Highly-Qualified, Diverse Workforce • Enable Efficient Human Capital Services • Plan and Position for Mission Success • Train and Develop Talent • Sustain a High – Performing Workforce

Enhancing NASA’s Diverse, Highly Qualified and Multi-generational Workforce Our Method  Implement an Agency-Wide workforce development initiative: OSSI  Transition a high-performing and diverse student pool into the NASA workforce, including industry and academia  Recruit students from ALL Institutions of Higher Education (IHE)

  4. Enhancing National Branding of NASA’s Internship & Fellowship Opportunities Create Two National Programs - NASA Internship Program (Undergraduate Students) - NASA Fellowship Program (Graduate Students)

Nationally Brand NASA’s Student Opportunities Pillar I: Recruit, Retain, & Develop To enhance the recruitment, retention and professional development of highly qualified STEM students for the NASA workforce pipeline. This will include career path liaisons who engage, inspire, and guide students toward career self-understanding. Key Partners: Students, Broker-Facilitators Corps, Business Manager, Mentors, Project Managers, Center OSSI Administrators & System Administrator Pillar II: Select, Place, & Mentor To select students for opportunities and provide placements that most appropriately match students’ academic preparation, competencies and interests with NASA workforce goals; To provide mentoring and support that ensure successful navigation throughout the internship and fellowship experience from beginning to end. Key Partners: Students, Business Manager, Mentors, Project Managers, Center OSSI Administrators, Center Selection Panels, & System Administrator

  7. STEM Workforce Development Processes Pillar III. Workforce Entry To formalize the transition of student participants in NASA Education internship and fellowship opportunities into the workforce, including NASA, the aerospace industry and academia. Therefore, providing a greater return on NASA’s investment in Education interns and fellows. Key Partners: Students, Project Managers, Human Capital, & Diversity Staff Pillar IV. Longitudinal Study To support the evaluation and longitudinal study processes of the NASA Office of Education Performance Management (OEPM) System; To provide alumni OSSI participants opportunities for re-entry into the OSSI processes. Key Partners: Students/Alumni, Education Performance Management System, System Administrator, Business Manager, & Broker-Facilitators Corps

The Opportunity The OSSI Functional Drivers: • Establish the OSSI Broker-Facilitator Corps, Business Manager, & Center Selection Panel concepts • Implement one electronic web-based application & standard selection process • Increase the number and diversity of interns/fellows who enter the space exploration workforce, including NASA, Industry, and Academia • Enhance national branding of NASA’s Internship & fellowship opportunities

  10. OSSI LaunchPad…http:/intern.nasa.gov A robust, comprehensive web-based communication center for the key OSSI partner-students, while supporting other key partners and stakeholders.

  11. Student Online Research Journal A means to promote and share the outcome of NASA-sponsored student research projects with NASA stakeholders, including the general public. 11

In Summary the One Stop Shopping Initiative is… • Working to build and sustain a more diverse, flexible, high performing, scalable, and multi-generational workforce • Utilizing the four pillars of the OSSI Strategic Model to nationally brand NASA’s student opportunities and develop the STEM workforce • Forming partnerships and identifying key stakeholders • Standardizing internship and fellowship recruitment and selection processes • Creating the groundwork for process evaluation and longitudinal study

OSSI Provides Value… • TONASA: By supporting the development of a high-performing and diverse pipeline of students able to meet NASA’s future strategic workforce needs in STEM and allied disciplines • TO STUDENTS: By providing access to various NASA opportunities through a single portal and a single application • TO ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS: By making NASA opportunities readily accessible to students and their parents, mentors and academic advisors (e.g., faculty, placement and other university staff and administrators) • TO INDUSTRY: By providing opportunities that help prepare students for the nation’s workforce needs in STEM and allied disciplines through experiential learning opportunities and educational financial support
