  3. Demographic Information • # of ELLs is a constantly moving target. • On 11.6.08, there were 2,340 ELLs. • This is 23% of our student population. • There were 1,233 in elementary school, • 443 in middle school, and • 649 in high school. • (See ELL Status Report for site %’s.)

Demographic Information (continued) • Since July 1, 2008, there have been 1,936 Annual CELDT Assessments and 516 Initial (new student) Assessments. • This totals 2,452 CELDT tests administered by ELD staff in 4 months. • 25% of each test must be given 1-on-1. • (See CELDT Administration Totals by School and by Grade for detailed information.)

Redesignations by Language Group inGrades 3-12 since R-30 Report (2.29.08) • 66 languages are spoken by ELLs in AUSD. • 10% of our ELLs in Grades 3-12 have been redesignated in the past 8 months. • This includes: • 11% of our Cantonese speakers • 10% of our Vietnamese speakers • 10% of our Tagalog speakers • 6% of our Spanish speakers

Conclusions • We have much to be proud of in the progress of our English Learners. • We are exceeding all current targets. • We cannot relax with AYP targets increasing so greatly each year. • AND our Spanish-speaking ELLs need heightened focus based on their redesignation data (40+% below the 3 other large language groups in redesignations this year).

  17. Lest We Forget Alameda Unified School District’s Goal #1: Continue to improve student achievement while also narrowing and closing the achievement gap in English Language Arts and mathematics between our lowest performing students (African American, Latino, English learners, and Special Education students) and our highest performing students.
