  1. Data Center Efficiency …… we are not there yet! Dr. Wolfgang zu Castell

  2. Where do we come from? Providig ICT services for the research center

  3. 35 Cooling systems Electrical and building systems 30 25 % of total data center electricity use 20 15 10 5 0 Chiller/ cooling tower Humidifier Computer room air- conditioner Information technology Power distribution unit Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) Switch/gen Lighting Power use What is the problem? Source: IBM, Site & Facility Services Data center efficiency needs close interaction of ICT management with facilities management need to overcome classical planning paradigms

  4. Where lies the potential? Source: IBM, Reserach & Development • effect is cummulative  have to incorporate all the technology at hand • resources are limited  have to utilise resources without over provisioning • Europe leading in technology combine ideas using a holistic perspective • process is dynamic, not static  need dynamic models and control

  5. Strategy Sourcing Liabilities FacilitiesManagement ICTManagement Applications volatile Infrastructure Another „Berlin wall“? HVAC static Building What is the challenge? Limitation in availabilityofresourceshastobeaccepted usepossiblelimits (e.g. ASHRAE 2008: 18°-27°)  ICT must serveaspromotertooptimiseprocessesandmake CO2efficiencycentralgoal

  6. joint project with What can be done? Shiftofparadigm: Identifylimitsoftechnicaleffectivenessanduseeffectiveness in an optimal way • need to develop proper metrics(e.g. Green Grid CUE) • need to built up supply chain over all technical levels (provide energy, use energy and utilise heat) • consider building within its environment(e.g. ground water use, solar energy) • need consise process (planning, realisation and operation) We can‘t control what we can not measure! need to develop tools to analyse real-time, spatio-temporal data, model and simulate real-time scenarios

  7. complex systems Where to go from there? Common aim: control of technical systems to simulate environmental conditions exposure chambers German Mouse Clinic Ultimate goal: control of biological systems laboratory animal facilities
