Reality Check The reality in today’s Job Market is… • YOUare responsible for making decisions about your future. • YOU will be competing with other job seekers that have more education and/or experience than you. • People who didn't finish high school seem to be bearing the brunt of the country's unemployment crisis: About 1.8 million college graduates have found work since January 2010, the WSJ reports, but 128,000 high school dropouts have lost their jobs during the same period. (The Huffington Post)

  2. Reality Check • One in three youth who start high school will not graduate four years later. (Orfield, Losen, Wald & Swanson, Losing Our Future) • In Fresno County, 25.4% of the Youth population does not have a high school diploma in 2012. (Fresno Bee) • US Average Weekly Earnings in 2012 (Bureau of Labor Statistics)

  3. What is the AYOS Youth Program? The AYOS Youth Program assists youth In-School 14-21 and Out of School 16-24: • Academic Services • Career Services THIS WILL LEAD TO, ULTIMATELY, A REWARDING CAREER!!!

  4. #1 Academic Services Having a solid academic foundation will prepare you for your career and build your confidence! • GAIN Assessments measure Reading and Math Skills and grade levels. • Online Tutorials help you raise your Reading and Math levels. • High School Diploma, GED and college or advanced training preparation.

Explore and Research Career Options Develop Career Goals Job Readiness Workshops Resumes, cover letters and applications How to be aggressive with your job search Interviewing Skills (Mock Interviews) Create your own career portfolio Work Experience- is not guaranteed. Once your academic goals have been met – work experience opportunities may be considered. #2 Career Services (cont’d) After completing Academic Goals and Career Assessments, we prepare you for the career you are interested in.

Commitment to Academic and Career Excellence Youth Contract • AYOS Youth Program focuses on academic excellence and not work experience • Your goal is to strive to achieve 2 grade level gains or more. • Job readiness and career exploration will be provided once academic goals have been met or significant progress in academics is shown • Update your Academic & Career Advisor (ACA) on any barriers that may affect your participation as they arise, and you will also keep the ACA updated on contact information

Next Step General Eligibility Requirements Schedule a one on one interview with an eligibility worker today! • Out-of-School Youth ages 16-24 or In-School Youth Ages 14-21 • Fresno County Resident or attend a Fresno County school • Legal Right to Work • Low Income • Basic Skills Deficient and or High School Drop-Out • Selective Service Registration (male 18 and over)

  12. Note: If you are found not eligible for the youth program you will be referred to another Community Agency that better fits your needs.
