1. GEOG 433 Day 23 Final exam will be Wednesday, April 23rd in this building, Room 111, from 1 to 4, with the exam shared with another class.

2. Housekeeping Items • I received some additional links, mainly thanks to Linda and Melissa, which I will share with you. But first I wanted to mention a major omission on my part. • In the mid-80s, the state of music in Toronto associated with the left was dismal. There were a capella groups (not good a capella), like Red Berets, who used to ride on the back of flatbed trucks singing protest songs to the tune “What Do You Do With a Drunken Sailor,” with refrains like “fight back and defeat them, fight back and defeat them, fight back and defeat them, earl-i in the morning.” • Then along came the fresh hurricane of the Parachute Club singing “Rise Up”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcC-SbcihKI

Housekeeping Items • 30 Seconds to Mars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Kvd-uquuhI and • Matchbox 20: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5d7EbtLb8ok • Michael Jackson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAi3VTSdTxU • Vince Vaccaro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGuN4fpIglY • One might also mention Midnight Oil whose lead singer, Peter Garrett, became the Environmental Minister in Australia. • A Hawaiian protest song by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AxVB5jOnoI • I (Linda) mentioned in class about the urbanization and destruction of the natural resources  of the  Hawaiian Islands. This is another protest song called Bruddah IZ ~ E Ala E is a call for justice of the Hawaiian people http://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PL812A6D53543A072D&v=Bw2M3QJ-oR4 • See also: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu-fRUzxVs4&list=PL812A6D53543A072D; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyLY8icyiEE; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIjpiFpnil0; and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y9WZxPcqFY

4. Housekeeping Items My Songs • Well, Sweet home Athabasca • Where the skies are so blue • Sweet home Athabasca • Lord I’m coming home to you • Here I come Athabasca • In Edmonton they love the premier • Now we all did what we could do • Now Robocall does not bother me • Does your conscience bother you? • Tell me true • Now Athabasca’s got the roughnecks and • They’ve been known to snort a line or two • Lord they get me off so much • They pick me up when I’m feeling blue • Now how ‘bout you? • Sweet home Athabasca • Where the skies are so blue • Sweet home Athabasca • Lord, I'm coming home to you • Sweet home Athabasca, oh sweet home • Where the skies are so blue • And the premier's true • Sweet Home Athabasca • Lord, I'm coming home to you… • I will also play two songs I recorded over 20 years ago in the wake of the first Iraq war. I also wanted to play my version of “Sweet Home Alabama,” but didn’t get to practice it enough: • Big wheels keep on turning • Carry me home to see my kin • Singing songs about the tarsands • I miss Athabasca once again • And I think it’s a sin, yes • Well I heard mister Young sing about her • Well, I heard old Neil put her down •  Well, Neil Young will remember • Athabasca man don't need him around anyhow.

5. Housekeeping Items • Today we will hear from Jen on “Riot Grrrl” music, and after that from anyone willing to give a short summary of their final research project. • I should note that there was some consternation – on at least one person’s part – about the short notice, especially when everyone is already in total stress mode. I apologize for the short notice, but want to clarify that that I am not looking for a major PowerPoint presentation – just a short 5-minute informal conversation with me and the rest of the class addressing: why you picked your topic, did it live up to your expectations, did you find out anything unexpected, and any final reflections you’d like to share.
