  3. What Is SAAN? SAAN = South Asian Awareness Network • A joint venture of the Indian American Student Association (IASA) and South Asian Student Council (SASC) • The collaboration of these groups enables SAAN to draw from a vast pool of established resources and networks

  4. The Purpose of SAAN • The purpose of SAAN is to empower South Asian students to have an active role in their community through college and beyond • SAAN accomplishes this by showing students the possibilities they have to excel and empowering them to reach for more

Date and Location • Date: January 31st – February 2nd • Location: University of Michigan-Ann Arbor • Most events will be held in the Michigan Union • Target Audience: Any college aged students with an interest in learning about South Asian culture and have the motivation to become active members within their respective communities. • Projected Attendance: 400 participants

  7. Vision and Mission • The vision of the conference is one that promotes cultural awareness and cultural activism within the South Asian community. • Our mission is to create a cycle whereby awareness and activism will facilitate the development of an identity increasing pride, confidence and respect for oneself and one’s community. This inspiration will foster our cultural activism, thus ensuring the continuity of the cycle.

  8. Broad Goals of SAAN 2003 • SAAN 2003 is the first step in creating a more unified South Asian community. The conference will enable participants to explore all facets of South Asian culture, creating an increased sense of awarenessandunderstanding • The conference will focus on issues facing current generations of South Asians living in North America. The conference will also discuss possible means that South Asian Americans can use to create a solution to these growing problems • Through SAAN 2003: The Continuity of Culture, we hope to present our diverse cultural heritage and encourage cultural activism in order to create a more unified and thriving South Asian community

  9. Needs that we are fulfilling • Exposure to South Asian Culture • Provide a forum to discuss problems facing South Asian youth • Addressing Political problems facing South Asians in North America • Creating opportunities for community interaction

Programming Topics • The following topics will be covered in an informative and objective manner. • Political (Conflicts of India, Hate Crimes, Development of South Asia) • Social (South Asians in American Media, Alternative Careers Choices, The Role of Women in South Asian Culture) • Cultural (South Asian Music, Mythology, Cultural Dance, Influence of South Asian Culture in American Pop Culture)

Conference Budget Publications/Marketing: $8000 Flyers, Posters, Program, Postage Small Groups: $900 Food, Info Packets, Gaming Materials, T-Shirts Registration: $1500 Folder Packets, Copies, Postage Finance: $1500 Printing, Postage, Phone IT: $500 Server Space, Domain Name, Graphic Designer Programming/Logistics: $33,000 Speakers’ Costs, Room Reservations, Transportation Food:$500 Saturday lunch TOTAL BUDGET = $45,900

Conference Stakeholders A successful SAAN 2003 conference will provide a positive benefit for all those involved, whether located at the University or within the South Asian community across the country • Academic schools within the University • Highlight diversity within all schools at the University • Allows for graduate schools to recruit prospective South Asian students from across the country • Student groups at the University • A successful conference will create more credibility for all Student groups at the University • South Asian Students • This conference is an exploration into their culture and future in this country • The Office of the President • Will allow the President a forum to interact with South Asian Students

SAAN Partners(Individuals, Organizations & Corporations) SAAN seeks partners who… • Wish to have an active role in the South Asian Community • Promote education as a means of self-awareness • Support the notion of self-awareness • Seek out an understanding of South Asian culture • Support the free flow of ideas among college-age youths • Believe in the importance of social, cultural, and political awareness

  16. Terms of Partnership • SAAN Partners have the flexibility to support the Conference in a way that best fits each Partner, this may include: • General Monetary Contributions • Targeted Monetary Contributions • Equipment Donations • Food Donations • Logistical Support • Technical Support
