Unit 2 - Solutions. What is a solution?. A solution is a mixture or a combination of two or more things. A solution is also known as a homogeneous mixture, because both components appear to be the same throughout the mixture. Can you think of examples of homogeneous mixtures?.

  2. What is a solution? • A solution is a mixture or a combination of two or more things. • A solution is also known as a homogeneous mixture, because both components appear to be the same throughout the mixture. • Can you think of examples of homogeneous mixtures?

Homo vs. Heterogeneous Mixtures Homogeneous Mixtures Heterogeneous Mixtures • The parts of the mixture are not distinguishable, and the solute is completely dissolved in the solvent. • In a heterogeneous mixture, the parts of the mixture are clearly distinguishable, and in general can be easily separated. Pizza is an example of a heterogeneous mixture Milk is an example of a homogeneous mixture

  4. Dissolving • Dissolve – we say something is dissolved when it is caused to go into a solution.   5. Some Important Definitions... • Solution – is the solute and the solvent together • Solute – the dissolved matter in a solution • Solvent – something that dissolves another substance. Water is a very common solvent. • Solubility – the ability to dissolve. We use the term “insoluble” if something does not dissolve.

  6. Miscibility • Miscible – two liquids that are able to dissolve to form a homogeneous solution. • Immiscible – two liquids that are not able to dissolve together. Oil and Water are immiscible – they do NOT mix together to form a solution.

  7. Key Point! The solubility of a substance depends on whether or not the solute is attracted to the solvent.
