  1. Research Essay Day 4 Writing the Body and In-text Citations

  2. Today’s Agenda • Discuss In-Text Citations • Review of what we’ve learned • How to do In-Text Citations • How to write the body paragraphs

  3. Review • Do you have your notecards complete? • Do you have your 2-Column Notes complete? • Do you have your thesis statement written? • If so, you are ready to write your body paragraphs!

  4. Thesis Statement • What???

  5. Introduction • Hook your reader • Give some more information or do more of a hook • Finish with your Thesis Statement (Your road map and main idea)

  6. Conclusion • Rewrite your thesis • Give a little more information • Leave your reader with a clincher

  7. What are In-Text Citations??? • You will need these anywhere you include information from your research (body paragraphs) • In-text citations are a way of giving credit to the author of the work you used. • Always comes at the end of a quote or a paraphrase. • You MUST give credit to your sources. If you don’t, that is plagiarism!!!

  8. What does it look like? • A perfect example of Beatrice’s logic is presented in act II, scene I, when she says, “He that hath a beard is more than a youth, and he that hath no beard is less than a man; and he that is more than a youth is not for me; and he that is less than a man, I am not for him,” (Shakespeare 19).

  9. Rules! Rules! Rules! • You only use the author’s last name and the page number. (Shakespeare 19) • You don’t write pg. 19 or Shakespeare, 19. There should be no punctuation inside the parentheses. • The in-text citation should come directly AFTER the quote or paraphrase you are citing.

  10. Good or Bad… • “Music is a language that has existed for many centuries.” (Ryland, 24.). • All Bella wants is to become a vampire and spend eternity with Edward. (Meyers 268) • “Cheese is the best food in the world!” (page 75) • “To be or not to be. That is the question.”

  12. How Long? • Introduction: One Paragraph • Body of your essay: Look at your 2-column notes. How many paragraphs do you need for your information? ( 4-8 paragraphs is a good amount) • Conclusion: One Paragraph

  13. Final Class • Friday, October 11th at 1:00 PM (Work Cited Page) What to Do now? Write your paper! 

  14. Marking Lessons Complete • Please remember, mark the lessons complete and you DO NOT NEED to do the OLS lessons! • You do need to do the following: -Notecards -2-Column Notes -The research paper -Work Cited Page (10/11/2013)

What to mark complete and how to… • Language 3- Composition Unit 3, Lessons 5-6 • Language 4- Composition Unit 2, Lessons 5 and 7 • Language 5- Composition Unit 2, Lesson 6 • Language A- Composition Unit 5, Lessons 11-12 • Language B – Composition Unit 5, Lessons 11-12 To do this, follow the steps below: • log in to the OLS from your student account. • Go to your Progress tab, click on Language Skills (composition) • On the right, click on the Unit list to expand it. • Click on Unit 2 or 5 the research paper or research report • Click to go into the lesson. Arrow through to the end to mark complete! • Give yourself an hour of attendance time for today in Language skills!
