  1. National History Day Summit Team at Cresthill Middle School

  2. “National History Day makes history come alive for America's youth by engaging them in the discovery of the historic, cultural and social experiences of the past. Through hands-on experiences and presentations, today's youth are better able to inform the present and shape the future. NHD inspires children through exciting competitions and transforms teaching through project-based curriculum and instruction.” NHD.org History Day is both a competition and a classroom curricula.

  3. All Summit students (either in a group of up to five or individually) will research a topic of their choice that fits the theme: Rights and Responsibilities • They will use Easy Bib to compile their notes and sources • They will craft a thesis statement that argues for their topic’s significance in history • They will then write a research paper in four sections where they will prove their thesis. • They will use Easy Bib to create an annotated bibliography of all their sources NHD in our classrooms

  4. Mrs. Superka and I have given a list of all due dates from now until December 16 • We will teach the skills necessary, confer with students individually, and provide lots of formative feedback and revision opportunities in the writing and researching process • Because all work will be housed online, you can also view their progress at any point along the way • The National History Day website has tons of helpful information if you need any ideas, examples, or other guidelines NHD in our classrooms

  5. NHD students outperform their non-NHD peers on state standardized tests, not only in social studies, but in reading, science and math as well. • NHD students are better writers, who write with a purpose and real voice, and marshal solid evidence to support their point of view. • NHD students are critical thinkers who can digest, analyze and synthesize information. • NHD students learn 21st century skills. They learn how to collaborate with team members, talk to experts, manage their time and persevere. • NHD has a positive impact among students whose interests in academic subjects may wane in high school. Why teach National History Day?

  6. Over 500,000 students participate every year from all 50 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and other American bases overseas. • There are three levels of competition: district, state and national. • Historians, teachers and college professors judge all the projects and interview all the students on their research and their findings. • All Summit students will have the option to continue to the contest! NHD the Competition!

  7. Students can enter the contest as groups or individuals in five different types of entries • Research Paper – Only Individual • Website – Group or Individual • Documentary – Group or Individual • Performance – Group or Individual • Exhibit - Group or Individual • You can view tons of sample projects in all categories on the NHD website (nhg.org), from the “Contest” page. NHD the Competition!

  8. Groups and three preliminary topics are due on Monday, Oct. 7 • Group Selection! • Mrs. Superka will lead you through a group selection exercise, but you should also think about what you know about yourself. • Think about the group projects from earlier this year: about their successes and their struggles. • Topic Selection! • Picking a strong topic in which you are authentically interested will help you have a great NHD experience. • Think outside the box, discuss your interests, google around, look to the website for suggestions. Next Steps…

  9. Next Steps… • Personal Interest • Clear connection to both rights and responsibilities • Important in history – caused a lot of impacts, positive or negative • Narrow • Instead of the Civil Rights Movement, use the Montgomery Bus boycott, The Little Rock Nine, or the forced bussing and integration of Denver Public Schools in the ‘70s. • Instead of World War II, use the creation of the nuclear bomb, Executive Order 9066, American companies making products for the Nazis, the UN’s creation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Olympic Committee’s decision to hold the Olympics in Germany in 1936. What makes a good topic?
