  1. Engaging with IndustryA Lean ConstructionSpecial Interest Group

  2. What is a Special Interest Group? • Small group of employers • Shared interest – e.g. efficient processes • Discuss and address work-related issues • Facilitated by CKE NW • Assisted by SCRI • Funded by NWDA and ERDF

  3. Who is in the Lean Group? • Construction Managers • Designers • PDA Partnership • Downs &Variava • Paddock Johnson Associates

  4. What have they done? • Focus on action learning • Good and bad practice • General discussions • The theory of lean construction • Industry practices • Planned the future of the group

  5. Useful questions • What is your issue? • Problem, opportunity, concern, project… • Why is it important? • How will you recognise progress? • What have you done? • What are you planning to do? • People, processes, philosophy

  6. Ground Rules • Share experiences • Listen and question • Support and challenge • Respect Confidentiality • Show Commitment • Focus: no mobile phones…

  7. Issues for Action • Generating dialogue on soft issues • Promoting pre-fabrication • Development of competent professionals • Problems around the design phase • Sharing good and bad practice • Management of on-site work • Communication between offices

  8. Impact “More of this kind of thing should be done. It’s better to have a dialogue than to be given information. In the past it’s been difficult total to talk about construction problems because of the entrenched positions of people in construction. Now we’re talking and finding out more about each other”

  9. Moving Forward • More structure • More members • More groups • Working with the university • Interface with researchers • Plan implementation of tools • Influencing policy • Develop evidence-base • Funding

  10. Questions? Veronica Jones v.c.jones@salford.ac.uk

  11. Moving beyond • Factory visit • Access to modules

  12. What have they done? • The basics of lean construction

  13. Previously… • Feb-28 • Lean-related problems • Lean theory • Opportunity for case studies • Implementation issues • Apr-05 • Good and bad practices • May-11 • Academic reflections • Individual issues

  14. Why did you join? • Find out what other people are doing, exchange knowledge and learn Specifically: • Learn about construction • Explore potential for lean in process and product • Make contacts for joint projects • Answer PQQs • Develop CPD modules

  15. Has it worked for you? • To some extent (x2) • Yes, but… (x2) • Yes, generally (x3)

  16. Issues Arising • Stop talking and start doing; focus on practical matters; agree actions • The exchange should be more focussed • Need to learn from failures as well as successes • The composition of the group could be better • Would have liked more input from civils perspective • Could do with wider representation • Could have done with more people from the design team

  17. Opportunities • Education and Training • CPD modules: development • PQQ workshops • Research & Enterprise Collaboration • 3D to nD modelling: development and implementation • Consultancy • Lean case studies: site management • Other • Research advisory body • Lean forum / progress network

  18. Useful questions • What is your issue? • Problem, opportunity, concern, project… • Why is it important? • How will you recognise progress? • What have you done? • What are you planning to do? • People, processes, philosophy • What were the lessons? • Success factors; main obstacles • How have you managed your knowledge?

  19. Ground Rules • Share experiences • Listen and question • Support and challenge • Respect Confidentiality • Show Commitment • Focus: no mobile phones… • Be punctual
