IUPUI Engagement in the Near Westside Timeline: 2006 22nd Annual National Conference on Race & Ethnicity in American Higher Education (NCORE) Work begins on the 5 year community health plan Service Learning grants to 3 teachers at George Washington Community School Wendell Phillips School 63 is opened & evolution of the Fugate Scholars program IUPUI Residence Life conducts a safe trick or treat alternative for community youth Involvement in the Near Westside Great Indy Neighborhoods Initiative (GINI) coordinator serves a lead for the education and social service taskforce IUPUI Center for Environmental Health presents their WESCO lead Project at the Christamore House Christamore House receives a federal grant to address health disparities in WESCO using the data from the COPC 5-year Health Plan Community GINI Quality of Life Plan is disseminated with a unified vision for the Near Westside Community

IUPUI Engagement in the Near Westside Timeline: 2008 22nd Annual National Conference on Race & Ethnicity in American Higher Education (NCORE) Listening to Communities at Haughville Library focused on IUPUI engagement in the GINI Plan implementation Team of partners and school personnel from GWCHS attend the Coalition for Community Schools Conference The first cohort of Near Westside Faculty Community Fellows are selected ( Dentistry, Engineering & Technology, Herron School of Art, Sociology, & World Languages and Cultures) The first cohort of Community Partner Scholars are selected to serve at partnering non-profit organizations ( George Washington Community High School, Haughville Public Library, Hawthorne Community Center, Indy Parks & Recreation, Wendell Phillips School 63) First informal meeting of the Central Indiana Community Schools Network Community Partner Scholars expanded to include 2 fully-sponsored scholars for Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center in West Indianapolis

    9. Great Indy Neighborhood Initiative GINI Great Indy Neighborhoods, a three-year set of initiatives, was established to support Indianapolis neighborhoods. The goals are to encourage neighbors to work together across traditional boundaries to: Organize and get involved in their neighborhood; Decide collectively on the priorities for their neighborhood; and Act on those priorities to implement change in their neighborhood.

Listening to Communities With funding from the Indiana Campus Compact ,The Center for Service Learning and Office of Neighborhood Partnerships has been able to host 2 dialogue sessions in the community since 2003. The following is the outcome of the conversation in which over 50 different issues were mentioned concerning the universities role and involvement in the neighboring Near Westside community. First Priority Student workers (business plans, housing, landscape) Frontier Field Office New Land Crew Grant-writing Second Priority New health research and programming Scholarships for youth and parents from Near Westside School 63 developed into a true community school Community Newsletter

Pilot Programs 2008-09 Community Partner Scholars 7 students awarded scholarships to serve at a partnership agency 10 hours per week during the academic year Faculty Community Fellows 5 faculty awarded stipends to integrate service learning into the Near Westside neighborhood using GINI priorities as a framework

    12. Architectural Technology & Interior Design Project Darrell Nickolson The Haughville Community is seeking design solutions for a retail setting responsive to student needs incorporated into comfortable student housing complexes. The success of this project depends on the input and feedback of the residents and community partners which include; the Westside Community Development Corporation, Haughville Library, cafe, barbershop, and retirement community. These sites are located in the heart of the Haughville Community located at 2232 W. Michigan St. Indianapolis, IN 46222.

Additional Faculty Community Fellows Projects Participating Schools & Departments Department of World Languages & Cultures Translation and interpreting for Spanish speaking parents and students at IPS Elementary School #63 and community taskforce meetings School of Dentistry Oral Health screenings, SEAL Indiana program, and Hoosier Healthwise referral program at IPS Elementary School #63 Herron School of Art & Design (files) Design and integrated communication projects for local community agencies and the community at-large Department of Sociology (video) Science Day outreach and Diversity Appreciation Day at IPS Elementary School #63
