  2. Step 1 • Read Stephen Crane’s Maggie, A Girl of the Streets • Pay attention to the details, notice the characters – how do they respond to each other? Why?, what was life like for the characters in the story?, Why do they make the choices they make? …. Etc.

  3. Step 2 • Pick a “project” (genre) from the list and create one for the novella. • For example: • You could write a poem inspired by the novella • Write a letter from one character to another • Illustrate the book in a painting • Create a movie trailer for the book • Etc., just choose something from the list on the next slide

  5. When choosing a genre… • Ask yourself… • Why am I choosing this particular genre? • What do I want to show, express, or convey through this genre?

  6. Step 3- research component • Research the tenement era • Find 2 articles that you can annotate • Feel free to use the following sites or you can use the Walton Media Center site (Mackinvia) • http://tenement.org/research.html • http://www.nps.gov/loea/index.htm • http://www.history.com/topics/tenements • http://www.neh.gov/news/press-release/2012-05-09 • History databases on Mackinvia

  7. Step 3- research component cont. • Now research modern tenement style housing in the USA. • Key words could be: Section 8 housing, slums, poverty, modern Hoover-villes, etc. • Find 2 articles you can annotate

Step 4- annotated bibliography • Now put the 4 articles (2 for modern/2 for tenement) you found in an annotated bibliography • This is the SAME format as what you just did for the research paper • EX: Citation, then a summary of the article, then a statement of credibility for the site, then what you learned.

  9. Step 5 • Choose a “project” (genre) to create for the tenement era • Choose a “project” (genre) to create for the modern era

  10. Step 6- putting it all together • In a binder, folder, book…organize the pieces of the project • 1st page= Dear Reader • 2nd page = Table of Contents • 3rd = your “project” piece related to the tenement era • 4th = your “project” piece related to Maggie, A Girl of the Streets • 5th = your “project” piece related to the modern era • 6th = your annotated bibliography • 7th = your self assessment

What is a Dear Reader letter? • This is just a letter from you to me explaining • What you learned • Why you chose the “projects” (genres) you chose • From what perspective you approached the project (did you do all the projects from the perspective of a child, did you do them all from the perspective of a family, etc.)

  12. What is a Self- Assessment? • This simply reflects what you learned. • All you have to do is answer the following questions HONESTLY.  • 1.What surprised you about completing this project? • 2.What was hard about completing this project? Why? • 3.What could you have done to make your work more productive/efficient? • 4.What did you learn from the process of creating this multigenre project on this specific piece of literature? • 5.What advice would you give to someone who was just assigned a multigenre project?

  13. The End • Now you have read a piece of literature and connected to the past AND present • You have reinforced your research skills • And you have had a chance to show what you know in a more creative way! 
