  1. Preparing to take the SAT and PSAT (Practice Scholastic Aptitude Test)

  2. The PSAT has: • 5 sections: • Critical Reading • Mathematics • Critical Reading • Mathematics • Writing Skills (30 minutes) You have 25 minutes each for sections 1-4 and 30 minutes for section 5

  3. SCORING: • For each correct answer, you receive ONE point. For questions you omit (skip), you receive no points (no penalty!) • For a wrong answer to a multiple-choice questions, you lose a quarter (1/4) of a point. • For a wrong answer to a math question that is not multiple choice, you do not lose any points.

  4. GUESSING: • If you can eliminate one or more choices as wrong, you increase your chances of choosing the correct answer and earning one point. If you can’t eliminate any choices, MOVE ON. • You can return to the question later if there is time.

  5. How difficult are the questions on the actual SAT? • Some of the questions are easy, and some are hard, but the majority are of medium difficulty. Medium-difficulty questions are answered correctly by about one-third to two-thirds of students. The SAT is designed so that a student who answers about half the questions correctly will receive an average score.

  6. How is the actual SAT scored? • The SAT will have three scores, each on the familiar scale of 200-800. Student scores will include writing (W 200-800), mathematics (M 200-800), and critical reading (CR 200-800). • Two subscores will be reported for the writing section: a multiple choice subscore on a scale of 20-80, and an essay subscore on a scale of 2-12.

  7. How long is the real SAT? • The total testing time for the SAT is 3 hours and 45 minutes. • The critical reading section is 70 minutes (two 25-minute sections and one 20-minute section). The math sectionis 70 minutes (two 25-minute sections and one 20-minute section). The writing section is 60 minutes (one 25-minute multiple choice section, one 10-minute multiple choice section, and one 25-minute section). The variable section, which is not included in the scoring, is 25 minutes.

  8. What are short-term preparation strategies? • http://www.collegeboard.com/ for free questions of the day and other practice assessments. Employing a variety of tools and test-preparation texts is the best short-term preparation.

  9. What will a student be required to write about on the essay section? • Students will be asked to take a position on an issue and support it persuasively with examples from studies and experience. It will be an open-ended question so students can answer it successfully in many different ways. The student will not have to have any prior specific knowledge about the topic to write an effective essay.

  10. Examples from PSAT: • The company’s self-serving executives ---------- the latest earnings report, boasting that the stellar performance resulted entirely from their masterful leadership. • vaunted B. beguiled C. enervated D. castigated E. exonerated

  11. Examples from PSAT: • The new plastic is highly ----------, able to withstand great stress without suffering permanent damage. • opaque B. circuitous C. extrinsic D. definitive E. resilient

  12. Examples from PSAT: • Hoping to ---------- the dispute, negotiators proposed a compromise that they felt would be --------- to both labor and management. • enforce..useful • end…divisive • overcome..unattractive • extend..satisfactory • resolve..acceptable

  13. There are also longer passages with numerous questions that follow.

  14. Remember… • Expect easy questions at the beginning of each set of sentence completion questions (in the critical reading section) and math questions. Generally they get harder as you go on. • Earn as many points as you can on easy questions (each is worth a point, no matter what the difficulty.) • You DO NOT have to answer every question • Try guessing when you can eliminate at least one answer to a multiple-choice question
