1. Input Devices

2. Topics to be discussed • Input Devices • Examples of Input Devices • Keyboard • Pointing Devices • Mouse • Joystick • Tracker Ball • Light Pen

3. Input Devices BACK Input devices is any hardware component with the help of which we enter data and instructions into the computer. Input devicescaptures information and translates it into a form that can be processed and used by other parts of your computer

4. Examples of Input Devices BACK • Keyboards • Pointing devices • Optical Scanners • Scanners • Electronic Tablet/Pen • Digital cameras • Web cams • Digitizers • Speech Recognition

5. Keyboard BACK • The keyboard is the most common input device. • The keyboard allows the computer user to enter words, numbers, punctuation, symbols, and special function commands into the computer’s memory.

6. Diagram of Keyboard

7. Types of Keyboards • Typically 101 keys laid out in the QWERTY fashion; connected to the computer by a cable • Designed to help prevent cumulative trauma disorder (CTD) or damage to nerve tissues in the wrist and hand due to repeated motion Enhanced / Extended Keyboard Ergonomic Keyboard BACK

8. Pointing Devices BACK Pointing devices are mainly used to choose and enter commands. Examples of Pointing Devices are Mouse Joystick Tracker ball Light Pen

9. Mouse • Mouse is very Popular cursor control device. • A mouse is a small box with a around ball at bottom. • A mouse is palm sized. • There are two or three depression switches on the top. • As the mouse is moved, its movements are mirrored by the on-screen pointer. • Mouse is rolled on a flat surface.

10. Types of Mouse • Contains a rotating wheel used to scroll vertically within a text document; connects to USB port • Uses infrared signals to connect to the computer’s IrDA port; it must be within sight of the receiving port Wheel Mouse Cordless Mouse

11. Using the Mouse • Mouse buttons enable the user to initiate actions. • Clicking (left-, right-, or double-clicking) allows the user to select an item on the screen or open a program or dialog box • Click and drag – Holding down the left mouse button and moving the mouse enables the user to move objects on the screen

12. Joystick • Joystick is also a pointing device which is used to move cursor position on a monitor screen. • Joystick is a stick having a spherical ball at its both lower and upper ends. • The lower spherical ball moves in a socket. • The Joystick can be moved in all four directions. • It is mainly used in Computer Aided Design and playing computer games.

13. Tracker ball • A Tracker ball is a pointing device which is mostly used in notebook or laptop computer. Instead of mouse. • To move the graphics cursor on the screen, the ball is rolled with hand, the button is pushed with a finger or a finger is simply moved on the square platform. • It requires little arm movement. • It requires less space .

14. Light Pen • Light Pen is a Pointing device which is used to select a displayed menu item or draw pictures on the monitor screen. • It consists of a photocell and an optical system placed in a small tube. • When its tip is moved over the monitor screen and pen button is pressed, its photocell sensing element detects the screen location and sends the corresponding signal to the CPU.
