  1. Today we will analyze the meaning of complex words using our knowledge of prefixes and base words. analyze= investigate

  2. What hemisphere do you live in? In the word hemisphere, you have a root word and a prefix. Hemi means half and sphere means globe. So hemisphere means half of a globe or the bottom or top half of the Earth.

  3. Complex words A base or a root word combined with an prefix and/or a suffix. Combined=put together

  4. Prefix: a word part that is added to the beginning of a base word to create a new word • Example: • Pacoima Charter School is located in the northern hemisphere. • Non-Example: • I was looking under a microscope and saw some hemime that the geologist found. • Hemi=microscopic reddish-brown crystals

  5. Base Word: A word that can stand alone, but can change meanings when a prefix is added. Example: sphere The earth is shaped like a sphere. (ball) I live in the northern hemisphere on planet Earth. (half a ball)

  6. Let’s look at some more prefixes….....Auto=selfSelf =self

  7. Let’s look at some base/root words! • confident • -crat • mobile • -graph • -onomy • biography • sufficient

  8. confident= certain/positive Tiger Woods was confident about the shot he was about to make.

  9. -Crat as in democrat = participant in or supporter of President Obama belongs to the Democrat political party.

  10. Mobile= able to move The robot’s arm was very mobile it was able to pick up a glass and not break it.

  11. Graph=write: as in calligraphy I wrote a letter to my friend in calligraphy, it was really difficult to write this way for a long time!

  12. -onomy=law or order: as in astronomy I was studying astronomy to see the order in which stars are arranged.

  13. Biography= life story President Obama’s biography is an interesting story of his life.

  14. Sufficient= adequate, enough There were sufficient chairs in the classroom, just enough for all the students.

  15. Why is it important to know how to analyze words? • It’s important to know how to analyze words so that: • we can understand the sentence • we can be better readers • we can read and write sentences correctly

  16. How are we going to analyze complex words? • Readthe sentence. • Readall of your choices. • Think about what each base/root word and prefix means. • Choose the word the BEST fits the sentence.

  17. How do I choose the correct word for the sentence? • Jan needed a car to get to work. What did she need? • Self confident • Autocrat • Automobile • Automatic automobile Why didn’t I use the word “semicircle”?
