  2. Terms • Decade – a group of ten years • Tell me something that happened in the past decade. • Century – a group of 100 years • Name a person who lived in the past century. • Millennium = a group of 1,000 years • Now name an event that happened about a millennium ago.

  3. ERAS • A large division of time • Prehistory = time before people developed writing • Ancient History = 5,500 BC- C.AD 500 • *c = circa = about • Middle Ages = AD 500 – AD 1400 • *Medieval Period • Modern History = AD 1400 – present day

  4. Calendars • 40 different • We use the Gregorian • Chinese/Jewish/Egyptian calendars based on the cycles of the moon. • Julian Calendar – not precise, lost one day every 128 years

  5. Gregorian • Pope Gregory XIII • Start counting at birth of Jesus • Includes leap years • Most of the world uses this calendar • Based on events of religious importance

  6. Dating Events • B.C. = Before Christ • A.D. = Anno Domini “in the year of the lord” • BCE = Before Common Era • CE = Common Era

  7. Timeline Put important calendar dates for the school year on a timeline.

  8. Digging Up the Past • Since the invention of writing, people have recorded important events. • Students of prehistory have a more difficult challenge because there are no written records to study.

  9. Archaeology The study of the past by looking at what people left behind. Archaeologists discover artifacts!

  10. Paleontology • Paleontologists study prehistoric times. • They study fossils to learn what the world was like long ago.

  11. Anthropology • The study of human culture and how it develops over time. • Anthropologists study artifacts and fossils, too. • They look for clues that show what people valued and believed.
