Crawdad Conference presentation Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College
Since the fall of 2007, students at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, in conjunction with Southeast faculty and staff, have organized local artists and musicians—most of them young artists and musicians—to present a series of festival and concert events in the town of Cumberland, Kentucky. The events provide much-needed activities for the young people of a coalfield community. • The first event was called Captain Crawdad Social Experiment 119. Subsequent events included: the Crawdad Cookout, Crawdadoween, Crawdad de Mayo, Crawdadoween: The Sequel, and Crawdad 6.0. Over 140 artists have participated in six events; total attendance for the events has been 2,000+. • Students recruit the bands and artists; design the t-shirts; market the events; and hold weekly organizational meetings. Thus, through the project , students learn invaluable managerial skill-sets. • Cumulatively, the result has been the creation of a sustainable, community-based cultural institution for a “distressed” county.
