  2. Hazards of Gas Stations • Gas stations can pose significant hazards to neighbors, especially children. Some of the perils include groundwater hazards from petroleum products leaking into the ground, and exposure hazards from other chemicals that might be used at the station if it’s also a repair shop.

  3. Oil Spills’ Effect on Humans • by direct contact with the skin • through ingestion of contaminated water and/or particles • by consuming contaminated food • by decreased property values from the affected areas • Overall economical impact

  4. Oil Spills’ Effects on Animals • Birds die from oil spills if their feathers are covered in oil. The bird will then be poisoned because it will try to clean itself. Animals may die because they get hypothermia. They may die from really low body temperatures. Oil may also cause the death of an animal by entering the animal’s lungs or liver. The animal will then be poisoned by the oil. Oil also can kill an animal by blinding it. The animal will not be able to see and be aware of their predators so they will be eaten.

  5. Effects on Water • Oil from gas station tanks leaks into the ground and contaminates ground water. If it is pumped up through wells and people drink it, it can cause us to get sick. The oil can also flow on the ground to lakes, streams, etc. and pollutes the water. This contaminates all the wildlife that lives in the water. The oil floats on top of the water and spreads. Soon it breaks down and some sinks into the water.

  6. Solutions • Put a lining around the oil tanks so if the tank does break the lining keeps it where the tank used to be. It won’t spread through the ground. • We can also have stronger tanks that are less likely to break.
