  1. Daniel chapter 9 Two sets of 70

  2. Daniel chapter 9 • Daniel 9:2, what are the books that Daniel refers regarding the seventy year prophecy? • Daniel 9:2 In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem. • ANSWER: Jeremiah and Deuteronomy (Jer. 25:13; 29:10; 30:2 and Deut.28:15-68) • Jeremiah 29:10 For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

  3. Daniel chapter 9 2. Daniel 9:5, why does Daniel say "we" have sinned? • Daniel9:5 We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments: • ANSWER: Daniel identifies himself as a member of the nation, but there is more here than just identification. Daniel is a type of Christ and Moses in also bearing the sin of his people and prayers for them. • Compare this attitude with that of the Pharisee and the publican in Luke 18:9. • 9. And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: • Our goal must be to give God glory, and we do that best by helping each other work together to God's kingdom.

  4. Daniel chapter 9 • In Daniel's prayer (Daniel 9:15-19), what are the seven reasons he uses in his prayer to urge that God finish the 70 years of desolation of Jerusalem. • Daniel9:15 And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly. 16 O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, … 17 Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord's sake. 18 … behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies. 19 … O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake … • Past history and Acknowledgement of sin - v.15 • God's righteousness - v.16 • God's sanctuary - v.17 • Our situation and God's great mercy - v.18 • God's sake - v.19

  5. Daniel chapter 9 4. Should we parallel Daniel's attitude in our prayers to God for Christ's return? • Daniel 9:17 Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord's sake. • Daniel 9:19 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people … • ANSWER: Yes, and we do so with the words in the Lord's prayer, i.e., "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven", which parallels Daniel 9:17,19, “Lord’s sake” and “Own sake”but what about praying for Jesus’ return in light of Amos 5:18 • Amos 5:18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light. • Could we be the us? Rom.5:1 helps! • Romans5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

  6. Daniel chapter 9 • Dan. 9:24 "Seventy weeks" = how many years plus “finish the transgression”, “end of sins & most holy”? • Daniel9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, …and to anoint the most Holy. • ANSWER: 70 X 7days/week = 490 days and using the day for year principle, = 490 years • "Finish the transgression"= The crucifixion was the culmination of their transgression as seen in the parable of the wicked husbandmen, (Mt. 21:33-41 “they will reverence my son”). • "Make an end of sins"= A more faithful rendering is, "to make an end of sin offerings. This was accomplished when Jesus offered himself. (See Heb. 9:25,26) • "anoint the most Holy"= the appointment of Jesus to the office of priest happened upon Jesus’ resurrection. • Hebrews 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God,

  7. Daniel chapter 9 • Re: Dan. 9:25,26 When was the commandment to restore and build Jerusalem? Daniel9:25 …from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks…26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off… and the people of the prince (Titus) that shall come shall destroy the city … and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. • Decree of Artaxerxes to Nehemiah in 444 B.C. (Neh. 2:1-8) • What is the date the Messiah was cut off? • ANSWER: Passover A.D. 33. • A super check that a prophetic year is 360 days? • 62 wks+7 wks = 69 wksX7days/wk= 483 days X 360 days/Yr. = 173,880. • 444 B.C. to 33 A.D.= 444 + 33 = 477 yrs - 1 = 476 yrs.(365.24) = 173,855 days. • 173,880 - 173,855is 25 days short but passover can vary by that amount some years being in March and others years in April. Who were the “people of the prince"? • The Roman army for the prince in v.26 was the Roman general Titus who became emperor in A.D. 79.

  8. Daniel chapter 9 • Re: Dan. 9:27 "Who confirmed the covenant with many, was cut off allowing abominations to come? Daniel9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the weekhe shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominationshe shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, … • Who confirmed the covenant - Christ -- New Covenant - 1 Cor. 11:25. The Messiah was cut off in the middle of the week, AD 33 The remaining part would include Pentecost, the conversion, then education of Paul, in Arabia, and the call of the Gentiles (Cornelius 444/445 BC) ending the 70 week prophecy. • What date did the sacrifice and oblation cease? • AD 33 when the body is come, there is no further need for the shadow. Christ with his death, did away with the law of Moses with its "sacrifice and oblation". • What were the abominations? • Matt. 24:15 = The Roman destruction of the temple in AD 70, the erection of Caesar statues throughout Jerusalem and the erection of the Dome of the Rock upon the Temple mount. • (Ency. Brit. Vol 17, 1968 ED. p. 167. "In 691 AD, therefore he (Abd-al-Malik) erected the Dome of the Rock on the site of the temple of Solomon.")
