  1. Assistive Technology The enhancement of the disabled

  2. What is Assistive Technology? • Assistive Technology is any item of equipment or software that aids in the advancement or maintenance of individuals with disabilities. • AT aids individuals with disabilities by enhancing the opportunities they have to gain competency in many different arenas.

  3. Legislation in regards to Assistive Technology • American With Disabilities Act (ADA)- Prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in employment, State and Local government, public accommodations, commercial facilities, and public transportation. • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)- Passed in 1975, essentially opened public education to every child no matter what disabilities were present in the individual. • Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act- Requires that all electronic of IT developed and used by any federal government agency must be accessible to people with disabilities.

Legislation in regards to Assistive Technology • Assistive Technology Act of 1998- this act essentially provided funds for the disabled to have access to developmental centers that provide such services as low interest loans to buy equipment that may be needed, and protection to families while accessing the services that may be needed. • Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act of 1998- required schools to integrate vocational curriculum for disabled students. The Act also required that a report be submitted and reviewed of how the disabled students were being integrated.

  5. Hearing Devices Tools that aid the Hearing impaired

  6. Assistive Listening Devices (ALD) • These tools help amplify the sounds you want to hear! Especially when there is a lot of background noise. These tools are exceptionally useful for students in a regular classroom.

  7. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) • This type of tool helps individuals with communicative disorders express themselves in everyday life. The tools range from a simple picture board to computer software that synthesizes speech to text!

  8. Seeing Impaired Tools that aid the visually challenged

  9. Screen Readers • Specialized type of software that coverts electronic text to speech and outputs it to headphones, speakers, or braille documents. The Screen Readers stay in line with the users preference.

  10. Screen Magnifiers • Software that increases font sizes on a computer screen. The Magnifiers are also useful for senior adults who have lost some of their vision. The tool is also most helpful in schools because it can be used to help many different kids.

  11. Text to Speech Software • Converts written text, such as articles, web pages, PDFs, emails, etc into audio files that can play in a wide range of devices, computers, Ipods, Cd players, etc.

  12. Learning Disabled Tools that enhance opportunities for the learning disabled

  13. Abbreviation Expanders • Used in software programs, allows for users to create, store, and re-use abbreviations for frequently used words or phrases, that assist the students to remember by phrases.

  14. Alternative Keyboards • These Keyboards help reduce the options students have to choose from in order to limit chaos and help the students focus on the task at hand. These keyboards help minimize the amount of things that can distract the students during computer work.

  15. Audiobooks and Publication • Books that can be played on audiocassettes, CD’s, and MP3 downloads. This assist in students learning context from other sources.

  16. Physical Impairments Tools utilized to support individuals with Physical Impairments

  17. Mouth Sticks • A tool used to enable users to control input through a stick the individual can manipulate with their mouth.

  18. Single Switch Access • For people with limited mobility a switch will be put to the side of their heads to allow them to click it with head movements.

  19. Eye Tracking • These devices can be extremely helpful for individuals who have no movement. The device allows the eyes to navigate the computer with only eye movement.
