  1. Pastor’s Introduction Since 1908 the Cheverus Centennial School, as it was first known, has provided an affordable and a superior Catholic education to generations of families from Malden and the surrounding communities. Some of our graduates proudly state their grandparents attended Cheverus. Many more point to their parents as the ones who first walked the halls of this great school. A reading of the Parish history clearly shows Sacred Hearts Church as “the heart and center” of Malden and its’ citizenry. Father Shahan, known as the “church builder of the Archdiocese,” founded the Parish in 1890. It was Fr. Shahan’s tireless labors and piety, “built on Christ himself, the true cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20),” that sustained Sacred Hearts Parish through 3 centuries! Fr. Hally, the second pastor, quickly paid down the church debt and immediately rallied his parishioners to build a school that would welcome their children. The Sisters of Providence, who were assisting at Saint Rose in Chelsea, were invited to similarly staff the Cheverus. In keeping with their congregation’s rules and charisms, the Sisters of Providence do not teach boys beyond grade 8. Cheverus maintained a girls’ high school until 1971. The grammar school has operated without interruption since 1908. The value of a Catholic education is indispensable. It is not enough simply “to know,” but through prayer and study, come to knowledge of God through Jesus Christ. The Cheverus has nurtured a thirst for knowledge together with a holy curiosity about the world for its students. The basis of Catholic education is the discovery of God’s loving handiwork and creative plan. Jesus’ life and ministry was one of teaching and revelation. Saint Paul would state, “If I understand all mysteries and possess knowledge so as to move mountains, but have not love, I gain nothing. (1 Corinthians 13:2).” The Cheverus wants each of its graduates to know the love that God has for them, and to apply that knowledge and love to the problems of the world. A Catholic education is instrumental in the early and later childhood years, but gains even greater relevance for teenagers and high school students. The Cheverus is committed to offering, once again, a quality Catholic education to high school girls. In order to achieve this, the school will require the basic tools that support higher education. In by-gone days, a girls’ high school concentrated on office skills. Cheverus met that need. Today a well-rounded girls’ curriculum must be supported by modern science labs and a performing arts center. An affordable all-girl’s high school will regionally strengthen, complete and give fullest expression to the model of Catholic education. While all-boys’ schools are prevalent in Greater Boston and the North Shore, Malden Catholic being the closet to Cheverus, few if any devote themselves exclusively to girls. Cheverus would like to position itself to meet that need. As you look through the pages of this presentation, we hope our sense of excitement and purpose is shared by you. Without substantial financial assistance, this vision will be impossible to achieve, or it will come to fruition only after many delays. The thought that one boy or girl should turn elsewhere creates a compelling sense of urgency. The Cheverus is vibrant and a personal visit will be indispensable for you to experience the pulse of the school. It will also enable you to see firsthand the scope of this proposal. Please accept my personal invitation, together with that of Mr. Thomas Arria, to visit. Contact information can be found at the end of the presentation.

  2. Principal’s Vision & Overview Consistent with our recent efforts to continue to provide a well-rounded, quality education to a growing student body, Cheverus Catholic seeks to convert one of its traditional classrooms into a multi-purpose science laboratory/teaching station (CLAB). Currently located on the third floor, this classroom is spacious and adjacent to a large closet which would become part of the new “Science Center.” While we presently have a science curriculum taught by an able, innovative, and enthusiastic teacher, we do not have the proper space or equipment to conduct the kinds of experiments consistent with a quality STEM program. Converting the current classroom will accomplish the goal of creating a “state of the art” facility. • When the new gymnasium was built in the 1950’s, the original gym became superfluous. The proposal for the performing arts and lecture hall will restore relevance to an area that is now largely under-utilized.  Music, band practice and performing arts will appreciate the classic features of the old stage.   This will serve as a valuable tool in the event that a high school program is reinstituted at Cheverus. Changes to that classroom space involve: plumbing, gas and electrical work, sinks, burners, eye wash station, safety shower, fume hood, outlets, and a Smart Board. Additionally, the furnishings would include 5 student stations, each accommodating 5 students and 25 new student desks, a teacher desk and demonstration table. When the new gymnasium was built in the 1950’s, the original gym became superfluous. The proposal for the performing arts and lecture hall will restore relevance to an area that is now largely under-utilized. Music, band and performing arts students will appreciate the classic features of the old stage. This will serve as a valuable tool in the event that a high school program is reinstituted at Cheverus. Achieving the desired result depends upon professional design and construction. Although this can be costly, the benefits of a professional design cannot be underestimated. To that end, this proposal includes the procurement of Fishbrook Design of Haverhill, Massachusetts. Their projects in education have included the science labs at Cathedral High School, the gymnasium and cafeteria wing at Lynn English High School, and the Auditorium/Library and Fieldhouse at the Salem Street School in Malden among many others. Fishbrook Design is also experienced in working with a diverse group of construction firms and are skilled at helping to identify the best group to complete the project. We estimate that costs for the lab project including design and construction will be from $200,000 - $250,000. The estimate for the performing arts center would be substantially higher. The specifications and estimates for each project can be provided. Tom Arria, Jr., Principal
