Daily Schedule • 8:50 – 9:00 Flow In (students begin to arrive at school) • 9:05 – 9:20 Morning Jumpstart and Planner • 9:20 – 10:20 Literacy Block • 10:20-10:35 Teacher Read Aloud • 10:40 – 11:20 Specialist (M,T, Th, F) • 11:20 – 12:00 Specialist (W)/ Morning Meeting (M,T, Th, F) • 12:00 – 12:40 Lunch/Recess • 12:40 – 1:30 Content Block (Math) • 1:30 – 1:55 Writing • 2:00 – 2:20 Recess • 2:20 – 2:45 Intervention • 2:50 – 3:35 Science/Health/Washington State History • 3:35 – 3:40 Clean Up / Dismissal * Late start Wednesday the school day begins at 9:45 AM

  6. Daily Homework • Homework is a vital part of school and fourth grade. • Most importantly the purpose of homework is to reinforce skills learned in school. • Homework shouldn’t be a battle. • It should be expected as a nightly reinforcement of learning.

  7. Daily Homework • Monday – Thursday for 40 – 60 minutes • Sometimes long term projects may require students to do some work on weekends.

  8. How Much Help is Too Much? • Children do not want parents to do their homework for them. • Parents should not research or assemble projects. • Doing your child’s homework should not be an option. "The pupil who is never required to do what he cannot do, never does what he can do.“      - John Stuart Mill, 1806 - 1873

Dos from the Experts • Do Connect School Subjects With Everyday Life • Figure out a tip at a restaurant. • Balance a check book. • Estimate the total cost gas when filling up. • Figure out the best deal between like items. • Weigh fruits and vegetables at the grocery store. • Do create an environment accommodating to homework. • Designate a spot in the house. • Well lit and quiet space • Needed supplies readily available • Choose a designated time for homework.

  10. Don’ts from the Experts • Don’t be negative about your own personal experiences in school. • Instead of saying “I hated math too,” to empathize with your child, you may try, “I had a difficult time with math too, and this is how I conquered it.” • Don’t argue over homework. If you are unsure of what is expected please call me the next day and discuss it with me.
