  2. 2 Class: COA-8823 CS 8803 HS 8300 Healthy environment in the future General Background • A great amount of evidence link the availability of more nursing time per patient-day with better patient outcomes. [1], [2], [3], [4]. However, increased nurse workload and the growing nursing workforce shortage [5] reduce the amount of nursing time available for patient care activities. To add to the problem, nurses have to deal with several different devices to input data. Therefore, reducing the number of devices nurses have to interact with and automating the input of data to a larger extent will maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of nurses. • Team: Grace (CS) Ran (ID) Busra (HS) Musheer(CS)

  3. 3 Class: COA-8823 CS 8803 HS 8300 Healthy environment in the future Information from different sources should go into computer as documentation PDA Mobile Clinical Assistant[1] Printed charts PDA Monitor Notes [9] • Team: Grace (CS) Ran (ID) Busra (HS) Musheer(CS)

  4. 4 Class: COA-8823 CS 8803 HS 8300 Healthy environment in the future Information from different sources should go into computer as documentation Printed charts PDA computer computer Mobile Clinical Assistant[1] Monitor Notes • Not each kind of record talks to each other. Electronic medical records do not all talk to each other • Team: Grace (CS) Ran (ID) Busra (HS) Musheer(CS)

  5. 5 Class: COA-8823 CS 8803 HS 8300 Healthy environment in the future Hands are occupied carrying the portable device Spend too much time adapting new technologies even though they are willing to Nurses have no chance to document records in patient room Nurses have so many different equipments to manipulate Too many equipments shared will result in infection Nurses could only do the documentation long after their observations • Team: Grace Shin(CS) Ran Zhou(ID) Busra Ergun(HS) • Team: Grace (CS) Ran (ID) Busra (HS) Musheer(CS)

  6. Solutions 7 Class: COA-8823 CS 8803 HS 8300 Healthy environment in the future • Solutions Requirements • Nurses need not carry devices in their hands • Data input should be automated as much as possible • Minimize infections from spreading across rooms • Preliminary Solutions • Data input stations available inside every ICU room • Wearable Computing Device • Team: Grace Shin(CS) Ran Zhou(ID) Busra Ergun(HS) • Team: Grace (CS) Ran (ID) Busra (HS) Musheer(CS)

  7. Solutions 7 Class: COA-8823 CS 8803 HS 8300 Healthy environment in the future Room Integrated Computing Device In-Wall Docking System -  Device(Mobile Clinical Assistant) mounts in the wall-  After device is inserted, if the user press send button, the patient    information send to nurse station automatically- Available pull out the device from the wall • Team: Grace Shin(CS) Ran Zhou(ID) Busra Ergun(HS) • Team: Grace (CS) Ran (ID) Busra (HS) Musheer(CS)

  8. Solutions 7 Class: COA-8823 CS 8803 HS 8300 Healthy environment in the future Room Integrated Computing Device Benefit 1.Hands free 2. Minimize equipment (Several devices) to record information 3. Cost-effective solution that is simple to install • Team: Grace Shin(CS) Ran Zhou(ID) Busra Ergun(HS) • Team: Grace (CS) Ran (ID) Busra (HS) Musheer(CS)

  9. Solutions 8 Class: COA-8823 CS 8803 HS 8300 Healthy environment in the future • Wearable Computing Device • Hands are free • Helps control infections between different rooms • ...'SixthSense' • Team: Grace Shin(CS) Ran Zhou(ID) Busra Ergun(HS) • Team: Grace (CS) Ran (ID) Busra (HS) Musheer(CS)

  10. Solutions 9 Class: COA-8823 CS 8803 HS 8300 Healthy environment in the future • Wearable Computing Device • Sixth Sense • Developed By MIT's Media Lab • Automatically can read and input information • from non-communicating devices • Cost: $350 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzKmGTVmqJs#t=5m28s • Team: Grace Shin(CS) Ran Zhou(ID) Busra Ergun(HS) • Team: Grace (CS) Ran (ID) Busra (HS) Musheer(CS)
